Pierpont C&TC Students Honored

Pierpont Community & Technical College of Fairmont State University honored students for their academic achievement and named scholarship recipients at the annual Academic Awards Banquet in April.

Scholarships and awards are made possible through generous gifts made to the Fairmont State Foundation, Inc.

Lea Ann Anderson, a 2004 graduate of East Fairmont High School, received the Outstanding Office Management & Technology Award. A junior office management and technology major, she is the daughter of Roger and Carmela Anderson of Fairmont. She has been named to the Dean's List.

Anna Ash, a 2006 graduate of Fairmont Senior High School, received the Martha Rhodes Culinary Arts Scholarship. A double major in culinary arts and pasty & baking arts, she is the daughter of Douglas and Ellen Ash of Fairmont. She placed second in the 2007 American Culinary Federation Baron H. Galand Knowledge Bowl Competition, was on the advisory board to represent pastry & baking arts students, was an assistant for Community Education Kids in the Kitchen and participated in the Culinary Classic at Stonewall Jackson in 2006 and 2007.

Maria Beilman received the Outstanding Student in Fashion Design Award.

Lydia Bennett received the Glenice Q. Cather Memorial EMS Scholarship for Outstanding First Year Emergency Medical Services Student.

Douglas Blaker, a 1997 graduate of Hopewell High School, received the Academic Achievement in the Drafting/Design Engineering Technology Program Award. A drafting/design engineering technology student, he is the son of Pamela Blaker of Hookstown, Pa.

Savannah Cain received the Edge to Success Award.

Mark Carl, a 1990 graduate of North Rowan High School in Spencer, N.C., received the West Virginia Folklife Center 'Craft Apprentice Award. A Regent's Bachelor of Arts student, he is the son of Dennis Carl of Mannington and Deborah Kozlowski of Bradenton, Fla. He has three children, Nathaniel Carl and Chad Carl of Salisbury, N.C., and Piper Carl, who resides with him in Fairmont. A non-traditional student, he is a member of the 911th Civil Engineer Squadron in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. While at Fairmont State, he played semi-pro football for the WV Wham! Through his folklife apprenticeship, he worked as a volunteer historic interpreter at Prickett's Fort.

Samantha Chadwell received the Outstanding Student in Homeland Security Award. A senior criminal justice and homeland security student, she is the daughter of Jim and Sabrina Chadwell of Fairmont. In 2005, she was named Criminal Justice Student of the Year. She has been vice president of Lambda Alpha Epsilon, vice president of BIGLS and a member of Masquers and Pi Gamma Mu.

Tiffany Dobbins, a 2004 graduate of Williamstown High School, received the Higinbotham-Quintrell Scholarship for Outstanding First Year Veterinary Technology Student. A freshman veterinary technology major, she is the daughter of Mark and Kelly Dobbins of Williamstown. She is treasurer of the Student Veterinary Technician Association.

Janna Duckworth, a 1970 graduate of Grafton High School, received the Outstanding Para-Education Student Award. A para-education student, she is the daughter of David and Glenna Mathews of Philippi. A resident of Belington, she graduated from Fairmont Business College in 1971 with a degree in secretarial science, where she was a member of Nu Tau Sigma Sorority. At Fairmont State, she is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Sorority. She is employed by the Barbour County Board of Education as a teaching assistant for special education and has 20 years of experience. She was warded the county's Service Personnel of the Year award in 2002 and is active in the Barbour County Special Olympics. She was a class sponsor of the 1997 and 2003 classes at Philip Barbour High School and is a past advisor for student council.

Rebecca Fike, a 2004 graduate of West Greene High School, received the Outstanding Student in Food Service Management 'Dietary Manager Award. A dietary management major, she is the daughter of Lloyd and Pam Fike of Sycamore, Pa. A resident of Fairmont, she is a member of the American Culinary Federation.

Michael Fleming received the Outstanding Student in Developmental Math Award.

Teresa Forquer, a 1981 graduate of Clay-Battelle High School, received the Business Technology Award. She and her husband Gary reside in Wana and have three children, Ashley, Whitney and Zachery. She is a business technology student with a concentration in accounting.

Denise Gibson received the Outstanding Medical Laboratory Technology Student Award.

C. Lance A. Golden, a 2003 graduate of Doddridge County High School, received the Outstanding Graduate in Emergency Medical Services Award. He is the son of John and Joann Golden of Salem. He is a second year emergency medical services student.

Ashley Harrah, a 2003 graduate of Robert C. Byrd High School, received the Outstanding Interpreting Program Award. A sign language interpreting student, she is the daughter of Robert and Peggy Harrah of Clarksburg. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society and treasurer of the American Sign Language Club.

Megan Hatfield, a 2004 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, received the Outstanding Student in Interior Design Award. A junior interior design major, she is the daughter of Carman Salango of Mt. Hope and Sherry Salango of Beckley. She is a member of Baptist Campus Ministry, Campus Light and is a residence advisor for the Office of Residence Life.

Heather Haynes, a 2004 graduate of Nitro High School, received the Outstanding Early Childhood Student Award. An early childhood student, she is the daughter of Douglas Haynes and Anita Owen. A Morgantown resident, she has been named to the Dean's List and the President's List.

Ross M. Knowles, a 2004 graduate of St. Andrews-Sewanee School, was the Academic Award Recipient for Aviation Maintenance Technology. A junior aviation maintenance technology major, he is the son of Charles and Linda Knowles of Chapmanville. A resident of Nutter Fort, he is a member of the Civil Air Patrol 'Clarksburg Wing and Alpha Eta Rho.

Virginia Kuhn received the Outstanding Information System Student Award.

Deloris Landis, a 1972 graduate of Washington Irving High School, received the Outstanding Early Childhood Occupational Development Award. An occupational development/ child care practitioner student at Fairmont State, she earned a bachelor's degree in music from Fairmont State in 1975 and an Associate of Applied Science degree in nursing from Salem College in 1984. She and her husband Ronald have two children and reside in Harrison County.

Elizabeth Long, a 2003 graduate of Northern Garrett High School, received the Outstanding American Sign Language Communication Program Student Award. An elementary education and sign language student, she is the daughter of Gary W. and Alice Long of Accident, Md.

Matthew Lowery, a 2004 graduate of Elkins High School, received the Outstanding Student in Criminal Justice Award. A criminal justice major, he is the son of Nevin and Lori Lowery of Coalton.

Christina Mayle, a 1993 graduate of Philip Barbour High School, received the Outstanding Physical Therapist Assistant Student Award. A physical therapist assistant major, she is the daughter of Ira Mayle and Marie "Reann" Mayle of Philippi.

Bea McDaniel, a 1982 graduate of Roosevelt-Wilson High School, received the Outstanding Graduating Veterinary Technology Student Award. A veterinary technology student, she is the daughter of the late Boyd Ray and Mildred Louise Kight. A veterinary technology student, she is vice president of the Student Veterinary Technology Association and was named Outstanding First Year Veterinary Technology Student. She and her husband Robert reside in Folsom.

Kyoko Nagayama, a 2005 graduate of Komae High School in Japan, received the Outstanding International Student Award. A general studies student, she is the daughter of Takashi and Yoshiko Nagayama of Tokyo, Japan.

Valbona Palco, a 1999 graduate of Xhevdet Doda in Kosovo, received the Martha S. French Award for Achievement in Developmental Writing. She is the daughter of Halim and Zyhra Ruka. She and her husband Matt reside in Clarksburg.

Corey Rexrode, a 2005 graduate of Petersburg High School, received the Joe & Marty Rhodes Endowed Dietary Management Scholarship in Memory of Charlotte B. Flynn. A dietary management major, he is the son of Michael Rexrode and Tammy Hesse of Petersburg. He is a member of the Food Service Management Board of Advisors, Student Government, Library Committee and a representative for the Pierpont C&TC Faculty Assembly. He was named to the Dean's List.

Adam Russell, a 2004 graduate of Canon-McMillan High School, received the Outstanding Graphics Technology Student Award. A junior graphics technology student, he is the son of John and Gilda Russell of Canonsburg, Pa. He is president of the Student Graphics Organization and is a front desk employee at the Falcon Center.

Stacie Seckman received the Oustanding Health Information Technology Student Award.

Tiffany Skinner, a 2000 graduate of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, received the Dr. Joanna Nesselroad Early Childhood Award. A junior early childhood major, she is the daughter of Dr. Paul and Michelle Skinner of Georgetown, Ky. She resides in Farmington.

Jessica Talerico-Meathrell received the Outstanding Health Information Technology Student Award.

Aaron Twitty, a 2006 graduate of Fayetteville High School, received the Outstanding Student in Food Service Management Award. A freshman culinary arts major, he is the son of Joseph and Barbara Preast of Fayetteville. He is a member of the Culinary Arts Team, an Honors student and a member of an intramural basketball team.

Dawn Wiseman received the Women of Fairmont State Scholarship Award.
