Rider's Edge Course Offered

May 31, 2007

If you want to learn how to ride a motorcycle but, for one reason or another, never took the time, the Rider's Edge training course, offered through the Pierpont Community & Technical College of Fairmont State University Community Education program and Harley-Davidson, may be just the opportunity to put you in the saddle.

The Rider's Edge is one of many Community Education courses Pierpont C&TC is offering this summer. Classes for this particular course will be offered at Triple S Harley-Davidson, 308 Cheat Road, Morgantown, Interstate 68, Exit 7.

During classroom sessions, students will learn the elements of riding and control of a bike from certified Rider's Edge instructors. Next, riders move to a range where they can learn and practice their riding skills on a controlled, closed course. A light-weight, world-class Buell Blast motorcycle and basic safety equipment are provided to participants. Most insurance companies recognize the certificate that is given following completion of the course.

Rider's Edge was designed with new riders in mind. But Buddy Myers, one of the Rider's Edge instructors, said even experienced riders learn something when they take the course.

"It's a great beginner's course, but it's great for people who've been riding for a long time," Myers said.

Ron Weist, Director of Community Education, said the Rider's Edge training fits well with the concept of lifelong learning.

"This came together when we recognized a need in the community," Weist said.

"Harley-Davidson has the best training in the country. West Virginia has a high rate of riders who are riding without legal permits and so this is a way to improve safety on the roads and provide an opportunity for people to receive their proper endorsements. For some, this will also be an opportunity to scratch something off their life's 'to-do' list," he said.

For those interested in the training, Thursday and Friday sessions run from 5:30-8:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday sessions run from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Training will be offered on the following dates: June 14-17; June 28-July 1; July 12-14; July 19-22; Aug. 2-5; Aug. 16-19. Courses for skilled riders will be offered Sept. 1 and Sept. 2.
