Collegiate Singers Concert Is May 2
The Fairmont State University Collegiate Singers and Chamber Choir will perform their
spring tour concert on Wednesday, May 2, in the Turley Center Ballroom. The performance
begins at 8 p.m. under the direction of Jeffrey Poland, accompanied by John Morrison.
Admission is free.
The college choir tour included two performances in Toronto, a full concert at Calvin
Presbyterian Church with a local community group called the Upper Canada Choristers
and a worship service at Metropolitan United Church, which houses the largest Casavant
pipe organ in Canada.
Wednesday's concert includes the same repertoire as the tour venues, sacred and secular
music primarily written by Canadian and American composers. The Canadian composers
are Eleanor Daley, Harry Somers, Stephen Chatman and Donald Patriquin. Among the American
composers are Paul Basler, William Hawley, Aaron Copland, Stephen Sondheim and Andr
Thomas. The program also presents familiar sacred pieces such as "He, watching over
Israel" by Mendelssohn and the spiritual "Every Time I Feel the Spirit" arranged by
William Dawson. Folksongs from both countries are represented by "I Bought Me a Cat"
and "Ching-A-Ring Chaw" (USA); "Savory, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme" and "J'entends le
Moulin" (Canada). A poignant moment in the performance will be singing the poetry
of Christina Rossetti, "Remember," dedicated to the campus community of Virginia Tech
University.
