Community Education Classes Set in Braxton

Feb 06, 2007

Residents of Braxton and surrounding counties have the opportunity to take advantage of two courses being offered through Pierpont Community & Technical College of Fairmont State University's Community Education Program.

Sign Language for Beginners and an ACT Preparation Class will be offered at Braxton County High School in Pierpont C&TC's Braxton County Center.

American Sign Language is a visual-gesture language developed over many years by Deaf people to communicate. Today many thousands of people are discovering the satisfaction, excitement and communicative qualities of this expressive, visually rich language.

The eight-week class will start with basic signs and finger-spelling, while progressing toward the goal of simple conversation. There is a required book for this course. The cost of the class is $49. The class will be offered from 10 a.m.-noon Saturdays, Feb. 10-March 31.

High school juniors and seniors have an opportunity to potentially increase their ACT scores through a specially designed course offered.

The course is designed to teach the reading, English, science, math and writing skills that students will need to do well on the ACT national college admission exam. Test-taking skills will be emphasized. The course features Kaplan materials and certified instructors. The cost includes all books and materials. Enrollment is limited, and pre-registration is required.

"Whether students are trying to achieve the PROMISE Scholarship, applying for competitive college programs or seeking to maximize their potential and opportunities, this class will help them meet their goals, said Ron Weist, Director of the Community Education Program.

The ACT Preparation Class will be offered at Braxton County High School in the Pierpont C&TC Braxton County Center. Twelve sessions are planned. The cost is $295. Class dates and times are 5-8:30 p.m. Thursdays, Feb. 15-April 12, and 8 a.m.-noon Saturdays, March 10, 24 and April 7.
