S.T.A.N.D. Sponsoring Recycling Competition
Students Taking Action in Nature's Defense (S.T.A.N.D.) is sponsoring a recycling
competition that is open to all campus organizations, clubs, athletic teams and informal
groups of four or more students. The competition runs from Sunday, Oct. 15, to Tuesday,
Nov. 14, which is America Recycles Day.
Those participating are asked to collect the following recyclable items: plastic
#1 and #2 (soda bottles and milk jugs), glass (clear and brown only), aluminum and
tin. Paper, cardboard, Styrofoam and aluminum foil will not be collected. The drop-off
point will be the turn-around circle behind the Falcon Center from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Items will be counted individually by volunteers. Groups that include trash or non-recyclable
items among their collections may be disqualified. The group that collects the most
recyclable items will win a pizza party.
Along with Student Government, S.T.A.N.D. is sponsoring a day of activities in celebration
of America Recycles Day on Nov. 14. Events will take place at Main Street in the Falcon
Center and the turn-around circle behind the Falcon Center. The day's events will
begin at 7 a.m. with the drop-off of recyclable items behind the Falcon Center. Displays
showcasing recyclable products and an exhibition of art made from recyclable materials
will be set up at 10:30 a.m. Those who make a pledge to recycle can enter a contest
to win a seven-day Alaskan cruise. Light refreshments will be served from 11 a.m.
to 3 p.m.
