Science After School Program Begins

The Science After School enrichment program offered for kindergarten through sixth grade begins Oct. 9 at Fairmont State.

The program, taught by elementary preservice teachers, is under the direction of Dr. Deb Hemler, Professor of Geoscience Education, and Dr. Aileen Grattan and Jo Ellen Snider, adjunct professors. It is designed to engage students in active science.

The Monday-Wednesday afternoon section runs from 4:15-5:15 p.m. Oct. 9, 11, 16, 18 and 23. The theme for this program is "Oil Spills!," which will explore the formation, extraction, importance and environmental impact of using oil. The Monday evening elementary sections run from 6-7 p.m. Oct. 9, 16, 23 and 30. The theme for this program is "A Drop of Water," which will use water to explore all branches of science. The Wednesday evening section runs from 6-7 p.m. Oct. 11, 18 and 25 and Nov. 1. The theme for this program is "Sounds of Science," which will investigate sound, waves, and sound applications.

All primary classes (K-2) will be taught in Room 302 of Hunt Haught Hall, and the intermediate classes (3-6) will be taught in Room 106 of Hunt Haught Hall.

The cost is $25 for each section, and students may enroll in multiple sections. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. An application form from a parent or guardian is required. For more information, contact Dr. Deb Hemler at (304) 367-4393.
