Nursing Students' Articles to be Published

Sep 13, 2006

Two Fairmont State University second-year nursing students will be featured in upcoming issues of MODRN, a nationally circulated magazine that is published by the Assessment Technologies Institute, a company that provides remedial and review programs for nursing students.

The students, Renee Fox of Barrackville and Frank Wiechers of Germany, are both working toward an associate degree in nursing. Fox is the president of the FSU School of Nursing Class of 2007. She is employed part-time at a personal care home in Fairmont. Wiechers is a 2002 cum laude graduate of FSU with a bachelor's degree in marketing and management. He was named the 1999 and 2000 Harrison County Emergency Squad Volunteer of the Year.

Fox and Wiechers will be featured in the magazine's regular column, "What It's Like." Fox will be featured in the November issue and Wiechers will be featured in the December issue.

The column is reserved for accounts of the student nursing life. In her column, Fox discusses her work with a spinabifada patient during her clinical experience for her adult health care course at United Hospital Center in Clarksburg.

"I thought I was there to make an impact on his life, but he made an impact on mine," Fox said of her experience with the patient.

In his column, Wiechers writes about the experience he had at William R. Sharpe Jr. Hospital in Weston during his summer semester psychiatric nursing rotation.

"I talk about my perceptions before and what they were following the experience," Wiechers said. "My expectations have changed in a positive way."

Linda Turchin, R.N., M.S.N., FSU Assistant Professor of Nursing, said she encouraged the students to share their stories with the magazine.

"The editor, Mary Jane Janowski, was very complimentary to both of the students and graciously accepted both articles for publication," Turchin said.
