Homecoming Planned for Oct. 9-14

Sep 07, 2006

With the theme, "Rockin' on the Hilltop," Fairmont State University's Homecoming 2006 set for Oct. 9-14 will be a week packed with events including a parade, alumni events, entertainment and more.

"This year's theme is fun and makes you think of 'Happy Days,' 'Grease' and 'rock 'n roll,'" said Alice Shrestha, Student Body Vice President. "It brings back memories of simpler times, when there was less to worry about in the world."

The traditional Homecoming Parade will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, in downtown Fairmont. Any marching group, organization, community group or business interested in having a float in the parade should call the Office of Student Activities, at (304) 367-4643 by Friday, Sept. 29. Line-up for the parade will begin at 5:15 p.m. at the corner of Fairmont Avenue and Second Street.

The annual Pep Rally will immediately follow the parade at Duvall-Rosier Field. Clubs on campus will compete for the Spirit Stick, as cheerleaders and Marching Band lead the crowd in cheering on the Fighting Falcons. Homecoming court candidates, the football coaches and captains will also be introduced.

Six distinguished alumni will be honored at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Alumni Awards Luncheon in the third floor conference rooms of the Falcon Center. Admission is $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Alumni to be honored at the event are Eileen DeBellis Akers, Delbert L. "Butch" Phillips, Bobbi Bane Mohrman, Oce Smith, Brian L. Tristani and Chanda Ranjit Yonzon.

The Fighting Falcons take on West Liberty State College for the Homecoming football game at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at Duvall-Rosier Field. The Fairmont State Alumni Association will sponsor pre- and post-game events with a combined admission cost of $5. There will be a Pre-Game Tailgate in the alumni tent behind the scoreboard at the field beginning at 4 p.m. A Post-Game Reception will immediately follow the game at the field.

Student Government continues its tradition of a community service project as part of Homecoming Week activities.

"Every year, we try to make Homecoming about more than just floats, dances and football," said Laurie Johnston, Director of Student Activities. "While those are wonderful traditions, we also want to facilitate connecting our students to their community. We have found that each year's Homecoming community service project has touched not just the lives of those we sponsor, but also the students who take the time during the hectic week to work on the projects. We want Homecoming to be a time of pride, reunion and involvement for our students with those we serve in the Marion County area."

This year, students are sponsoring a fund drive to benefit the HOPE, Inc. domestic violence shelter. All of the campus organizations sponsoring Homecoming king and queen candidates are asked to participate. The entire campus community is also invited to participate.

"I think it is a great opportunity for us to raise money for HOPE, Inc.," Shrestha said. "We are honored to support such a good cause. We will definitely continue this tradition of community service in the future."
