FSU Students Win Academic Awards

Fairmont State University honored students for their academic achievement and named scholarship recipients at the 29th annual Academic Awards Ceremony on Friday, May 5.

Many of the awards and scholarships presented at the banquet were made possible through gifts to the Fairmont State Foundation, Inc.

Sophomore Chelsey Adams, a 2004 East Fairmont High School graduate, received the Outstanding French Student Award. A French major, she is the daughter of Thomas Adams of Clarksburg and Maria Marshall of Fairmont.

Senior Lauren Adams, a 2001 East Fairmont High School graduate, received the Outstanding Visual Art Student Award. An interdisciplinary studio art and French major, she is the daughter of Thomas Adams of Clarksburg and Maria Marshall of Fairmont. She has been a member of the Creative Arts Organization for Students, Kappa Pi International Art Fraternity and was awarded Best of Show in the 2006 Spring Student Juried Exhibition. She was awarded a full tuition waiver from West Virginia University to pursue a B.F.A. degree.

Senior Jacquelyn R. Antulov, a 1997 graduate of East Fairmont High School, received the Stark A. Wilmoth Outstanding Secondary Student Teacher Award. A secondary education major with a specialization in English and oral communication, Antulov is the daughter of John Martin and Barbara Jean Antulov of Fairmont. Antulov has been a member and president of Alpha Psi Omega National Theatre Honorary, president and member of Masquers and winner of the M.M. Neely Persuasive Speaker Contest. She is a cum laude graduate of the FSU Class of 2006.

Karen Aschliman, a 1995 graduate of Bellwood-Antis High School, received the Eddie and Betty Barrett Endowed Scholarship. An English major, Aschliman and her husband Shawn live in Fairmont.

Junior Stacy Barnette, a 1993 East Fairmont High School graduate, received the Outstanding Spanish Student Award. An education major, she is the daughter of Harold Roger Barnette of Mannington and Linda Jane Barnette of Fairmont. Barnette has been named to the President's List and has been a member of the Spanish Club.

Tracey Beall received the Associate Degree Nursing Student of the Year Award.

Senior Christina Beneker, a 2001 Nitro High School graduate, received the Outstanding Senior in Accounting Award. An accounting and finance major, Beneker is the daughter of Keith and Ruth Beneker of Cross Lanes. Beneker has been a member and past treasurer of the Student Accountant Society and recipient of the Conley CPA Group Accounting Excellence Award.

Courtney L. Boggs, a 2002 Roane High School graduate, received the Kappa Delta Pi Outstanding Elementary Student Teacher Award. An elementary education major, Boggs is the daughter of Richard C. and Debra A. Boggs of Spencer, W.Va. Boggs has been named to the President's List and was the recipient of the Underwood Smith Scholarships for three semesters. She graduated summa cum laude in December 2005.

Gary Bowers received the Harry J. Hadley Award for Teaching Excellence (Secondary).

Senior Stephen D. Burnside, a 2000 Doddridge County High School graduate, received the William and Doretha Clayton Barns Prize in History. An education major, Burnside is the son of Bob and Debbie Burnside of West Union.

Senior Ramita Chitrakar, a graduate of Raktakali Higher Secondary School, received the Outstanding International Student Award. An accounting and business management major, Chitrakar is the daughter of Govinda Prasad and Kamal Maiya Chitraker of Centreville, Va. Chitrakar has been a Student Government Senior Senator, Bryant Place resident assistant and member of the International Student Organization.

Junior Michael L. Clelland, a 1974 Fairview High School graduate, received the Louis Schoolnic Endowed Scholarship. An information systems major, Clelland has been a NASA Space Grants Scholar. He and his wife Lisa live in Rivesville.

Senior Dustin Cogar, a 2002 Lewis County High School graduate, received the Baccalaureate Achievement Award in Technology Education. A technology education major, he is the son of Terry and Donna Cogar of Weston. Cogar is engaged to Johana L. Jones. A four-year Falcon football letterman, Cogar received WVIAC honorable mention, was named Male Scholar Athlete of the Year and received the Walter Phillips Scholarship for 2005. He has been a member of the Technology Education Collegiate Association.

Alicia Crites received the T.J. & Madge Herndon Pearse Memorial Endowed Scholarship.

Holly M. DeBolt received the Vincent and Catherine Sansalone Scholarship.

Brandy DeVault, a 2002 graduate of North Marion High School, received the Outstanding Graduating Senior in Theatre Award. A theatre major, DeVault is the daughter of Michael and Sherry DeVault of Fairview. She has been a member and secretary of Alpha Psi Omega theatre honorary, an honors student, member of Masquers and has performed in various plays and worked the box office at Wallman Hall.

Junior Laura Fridley, a 1978 graduate of Mannington High School, received the PEO Sisterhood Scholarship. An intelligence research and analysis major, Fridley is the daughter of the late Arthur Fridley and Ruth Fridley of Mannington. She has been a member of the Political Science Club.

Nancy A. Gall received the Outstanding Sociology Student Award.

Senior Jason R. Galloway, a 2000 East Fairmont High School graduate, received the Baccalaureate Achievement Award in Electronics Engineering Technology. An electronics engineering technology major, Galloway is the son of Jim and Sally Galloway, formerly of Pleasant Valley, and is the father of Jarrett Galloway. He has been a member of Epsilon Pi Tau.

Senior Kimberly Goff, a 1994 Liberty High School graduate, received the Nancy Marie Duling Memorial Teacher Education Endowed Scholarship. An elementary education major specializing in mathematics, Goff is the daughter of John David Jr. and Judy Sharon Maxwell of Clarksburg. She and her husband Chad live in Clarksburg. Goff has been named to the Dean's List and President's List, and has been an FSU Collegiates member, FSU Concert Band member and America Counts tutor volunteer.

Senior Jennifer Goodson, a 2001 Wheeling Park High School graduate, received the Horace and Geraldine Belmear Academic Award. An elementary education major, Goodson is the daughter of James and Debbie Goodson of Wheeling. Goodson has been a Black Student Union member and vice president, FSU freshman counselor, has served as a Pay it Forward Mentor, and received the Minority Mentoring Scholarship and the Flesher Scholarship. She has been named to the Dean's List and served as a counselor for Future Teachers of America, Project Isaac and America Reads.

Senior Sarah Grumblatt, a 2003 James Monroe High School graduate, received the Outstanding Student in Oral Communication Award. An oral communications and English major, Grumblatt is the daughter of Shawn and Judy Grumblatt of Peterstown. Grumblatt has been a member and secretary of Masquers, a member and vice president of Alpha Psi Omega, secretary of the Ballroom Club and recipient of the PROMISE, Blanche Kinney and Falcon Gold scholarships.

Senior Derwin E. Hampton, a 1985 graduate of Redeemer High School, received the Outstanding Senior English student Award. An English major, Hampton is the son of Peggy Hampton of Baton Rouge, La. Hampton has been a member and president of Sigma Tau Delta International English Honors Society and has received the Mary Esther Jackson Award for Excellence in English.

Roger L. Harris received the Ernest Frye Outstanding Student in Computer Science Award.

Mary Catherine Harrison, a 1967 East Fairmont High School graduate, received the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Student of the Year Award. A nursing major, Harrison is the daughter of the late Mike Kucish and Alleta Kucish of Fairmont. She is married to David Kucish. Harrison has been president and vice president of the Student Nurses Association.

Senior Ashley L. Harshberger, a 2003 graduate of home school, received the Baccalaureate Achievement Award in Graphics Technology. Harshberger is the daughter of Scott and Denise Harshberger of Grafton. She is engaged to Eddie Garren. A graphics technology major, Harshberger has been a member of the Honors Program, Sigma Tau Delta English Honorary, Society for Collegiate Journalists and Delta Zeta Sorority.

Charles M. Helmick received the Baccalaureate Achievement Award in Architectural Engineering Technology.

Senior Contessa Hill, a 2001 Robert C. Byrd High School graduate, received the Outstanding Senior Biology Student Award. A biology major, Hill is the daughter of Donna Hill of Clarksburg. Hill has been a Student Government freshman representative, member of the Black Student Union and member and current treasurer of Students Taking Action in Nature's Defense (S.T.A.N.D.). She has received an award for undergraduate research and is participating in undergraduate research with Dr. Mark Flood and Dr. Sarah Dodson.

Michael Holman, a 1997 Fairmont Senior High School graduate, received the Melva Campbell Hess Award. A family and consumer sciences education major, Holman is the son of Jay and Margaret Holman. Holman has been a member of the Family and Consumer Sciences Honorary and vice president of the Family and Consumer Sciences Association.

Melinda Huff, a 1998 Liberty High School graduate, received the William C. Ruoff Outstanding Senior Chemistry Award. A chemistry major, she is the daughter of Robert W. and Norma J. Huff of Clarksburg. Huff has been a member of the American Chemical Society and served as the FSU chapter president. She was named the Outstanding Freshman Chemistry Student and Junior Chemistry Student of the Year

Johanna L. Jones, a 2002 Lewis County High School graduate, received the Bachelor of Arts Academic Achievement Award in Family and Consumer Sciences (Teacher Education) Award. A family and consumer sciences education major, Jones is the daughter of Roger Joe Jones of Weston and Jani Jones of Camden. Jones is engaged to Dustin Cogar. She has been a member of the Science Honorary.

Seegee Michele Kisner, a 2003 Preston High School graduate, received the Alice J. Rice Endowed Scholarship. A business and physical therapy major, Kisner is the daughter of Harry Steven and Dorinda Kay Kisner of Terra Alta and is engaged to Mark Bachtel. Kisner has been a member of Delta Mu Delta, West Virginia Bible Study and Pierpont Church of the Nazarene. Kisner works at Lakeside Physical Therapy and coaches for the Upward Basketball League.

Senior Marcia L. Knoll, a 2001 North Marion High School graduate, received the Sigma Alpha Iota Scholastic Award and the 2006 Sigma Alpha Iota Collegiate Honor Award. A music education and elementary education major, Knoll is the daughter of Gary and Janet Knoll of Idamay. She has been a MENC Outstanding Music Educator, member, vice president, treasurer and secretary of the National Association of Music Educators; president of the American Choral Directors Association, Sigma Alpha Iota treasurer, FSU Community Orchestra Concerto Competition winner, FSU Honors Recitalist, ACDA Collegiate Conference Honor Choir member and MENC Collegiate Conference Recitalist and named to the Dean's List and President's List.

Junior Brandon K. Knotts, a 2003 Grafton High School graduate, received the Consol Inc. Scholarship. A safety and environmental engineering major, Knotts is the son of Robert K. and Juanita Knotts. Knotts has been a member of the student chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers and has served as its treasurer.

Senior Jessica Lawson, a 1999 graduate of Lakes High School in Lakewood, Wash., received the Outstanding Journalism Student Award. An English major, Lawson is the daughter of William Alfred Lawson Jr. of Ava, Mo., and Jennifer Lawson of Fairmont. Lawson has been editor of The Columns, the FS student newspaper, and is a member of the Society of Collegiate Journalists and has received a Certificate of Merit from the organization.

Jennifer Leizear, a 2000 Boonsboro High School graduate, received the Baccalaureate Achievement Award in Mechanical Engineering Technology. A mechanical engineering technology major, Leizear is the daughter of Tim and Ruth Leizear of Boonsboro. She has been a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Sophomore Sarah Ann Lewis, a 2004 graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School, received the Ruth Marie Skaggs Scholarship Award. A family and consumer sciences education major, Lewis is the daughter of Curtis and Glenys Old of Wardensville.

Junior Jared A. Lowery, a 2003 Elkins High School graduate, received the Walter F. Phillips Jr. Endowed Scholarship. A mechanical engineering technology major, Lowery is the son of Nevin and Lori Lowery of Coalton. Lowery is a PROMISE Scholarship recipient, Falcon Scholarship recipient and has been a member and elected treasurer of the Society of Automotive Engineers. He has been named to the Dean's List and President's List.

Junior Buck Mallow, a 2003 Harman High School graduate, received the Conley CPA Group Accounting Excellence Award. An accounting and finance major, Mallow is the son of Jim Mallow of Harman and Amy VanDevender of Kerens. Mallow has been a Residence Life assistant residence director, New Student Orientation counselor, vice president of the Student Accountant Society, member of Delta Mu Delta and PROMISE Scholarship recipient.

Marcia J. Manley, a 1978 West Virginia Wesleyan College graduate, received the James A. LaRue Mathematics Award. A mathematics education major, Manley is the daughter of Richard L. and Darlene L. Crickard of Valley Head.

Senior Susan Moore, a 2002 Parkersburg High School graduate, received the Criminal Justice Achievement Award. A criminal justice major, Moore is the daughter of Terry and Sandra Moore of Parkersburg. Moore has been a member of Pi Gamma Mu, Alpha Phi Sigma vice president, and has been named to the Dean's List and President's List.

Whitney D. Moore received the Eleanor M. Ford Outstanding Junior Endowed Scholarship in Science and Math.

Junior James W. Mou, a 2003 Hampshire High School graduate, received the Mary B. and Edgar N. Jaynes Endowed Scholarship. An information systems major, Mou is the son of James F. and Rhonda Mou of Romney. Mou has been a member of Tau Beta Iota, Delta Mu Delta and has been named to the President's List. He has also been a NASA Space Grant Scholar and NASA IV&V Research Concepts Transfer to Higher Education student researcher.

Senior Frank M. Muldoon, a 2003 Pike View High School graduate, received the Bachelor of Science Academic Achievement Award in Aviation Technology A. Joyce H. Coleman Memorial Scholarship. An aviation administration and mathematics major, Muldoon is the son of Robert O'Quinn and Elizabeth Muldoon of Princeton. He has been treasurer and secretary of Alpha Eta Rho and has been named to the President's List and the Dean's List.

Senior Emily Narog, a 2002 North Marion High School graduate, received the Outstanding Student in Political Science Dr. Yu San Wang Award. An intelligence research and analysis and political science major, Narog is the daughter of John and Betty Ann Narog of Barrackville and is engaged to Aaron Hale. Narog has been a PROMISE Scholarship recipient, Honors Club Association member and parliamentarian, Pi Sigma Alpha member and president and member of Pi Gamma Mu. She has also been a member and vice president of the Political Science Association, member of the Washington, D.C., chapter of Women in Defense, Fairmont State Student Body President, member of the Young Alumni Committee, Student Government Sophomore Senator, Student Government Freshman Senator, and a freshman counselor and has been on the President's List.

Sophomore Phillip Nuce, a 2004 Morgantown High School graduate, received the Louis Schoolnic Endowed Scholarship. An accounting major, Nuce is the son of Darl and Diane Nuce of Morgantown. He has been a member of the Student Accounting Society. He currently holds an accounting internship position and was hired as a resident assistant for the 2006-2007 school year.

James Joseph Phares, a 2001Staunton River High School graduate, received the Farley-Branham Award for Outstanding Student Teacher. A physical education and health major, Phares is the son of James B. and Sara Phares of Fairmont. He has been a member of the Fairmont State football team and Phi Epsilon Kappa.

Sophomore Janelle L. Piercy, a 2004 Lewis County High School graduate, received the Consol, Inc. Scholarship. A mechanical engineering technology major, Piercy is the daughter of Charles and Jeanie Piercy of Weston. Piercy has been a member of the FSU Debate Team, the Society of Automotive Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Senior Kristie N. Rhodes, a 2002 Preston High School graduate, received the William C. Larew Scholarship. A forensic science major, Rhodes is the daughter of Robin Lynn and Robin Lynn Bolyard Rhodes of Tunnelton.

Freshman Adrienne L. Riggi, a 2005 Fairmont Senior High School graduate, received the
Outstanding Freshman in Chemistry Award. A chemistry and biology major, Riggi is the daughter of James L. and D. Denise Riggi of Fairmont. Riggi has been named to the President's List and been a member of the Honors Club.

Jonathan Ruben, a 2002 graduate Ravenswood High School graduate, received the Outstanding Senior in Business Award. A business management major, Ruben is the son of Wesley Dale Ruben and Laura Ruben, both of Ravenswood. He has participated in the Fairmont Leadership Conference and intramurals and has been a member of Delta Mu Delta.

Penny Scarberry received the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Student of the Year Award.

Amanda C. Schneider, a 2002 Urbana High School graduate, received the Bachelor of Science Academic Achievement Award in Family and Consumer Sciences. A family and consumer sciences and interior design major, Schneider is the daughter of Kenneth and Reinette Schneider of Ijansville, Md. Schneider has been a member of the Family and Consumer Sciences Honorary Society and the American Society of Interior Designers and is the ASID Fairmont State chapter secretary.

Kenneth L. Sell received the Baccalaureate Achievement Award in Civil Engineering Technology.

Senior Jennifer L. Shaffer, a 1994 South Harrison High School graduate, received the Baccalaureate Achievement Award in Safety/Environmental Engineering Technology. A safety and environmental engineering technology major, Shaffer is the daughter of Gary Wiant of Stonewood and Amy Coleman of Fairmont. She and her husband Matt live in Bridgeport. She has been named to the President's List and is a member of Epsilon Pi Tau and the American Society of Safety Engineers.

Senior Anna Sherer, a 2001 East Fairmont High School graduate, received the Outstanding Graduating Senior in Art Award. A graphics, fine arts and graphics technology major, Sherer is the daughter of Alice Sherer of Fairmont. She has been a member of the Creative Arts Organization for Students and Kappa Pi and has served as Kappa Pi vice president.

Senior Tracy J. Shingleton, a 1993 Lincoln High School graduate, received the A. Joyce H. Coleman Memorial Scholarship. A math education major, Shingleton is the daughter of the late Ed Hustead and Betty Hustead of Lumberport. She and her husband Christopher live in Mannington. She is the recipient of the Walter Regula Mathematics Teacher-in-Training Grant, a 1997 Fairmont State graduate in accounting and is currently employed as a CPA at United Hospital Center.

Senior Rachel Skubis, a 2002 East Fairmont High School graduate, received the Mary Esther Jackson Scholarship in English. An English and journalism education major, Skubis is the daughter of Albert and Brenda Skubis of Fairmont. Skubis has been a member of the Mound staff, the Society for Collegiate Journalists and Sigma Tau Delta. She placed second at the 13th annual Literature Symposium at West Virginia University and received the Outstanding Journalism Student Award and Writer of the Year Award. She also presented at the Celebration of Honors: A Symposium of Undergraduate Excellence.

Adam D. Snider, a 1999 Parkersburg South High School graduate, received the National Business Education Association Merit Award. A business education major, Snider is the son of David A. and Linda S. Snider of Mineral Wells. He and his wife Jessica R.H. Snider live in Mineral Wells. Snider is a cum laude graduate of Fairmont State.

Senior Sarah Starkey, a 1996 Notre Dame High School graduate, received the Outstanding Graduating Senior Psychology Student Award. A psychology major, she is the daughter of Carl Zemenick of Pensacola Beach, Fla., and Jeannine Amos of Clarksburg. Starkey and her husband Joe live in Clarksburg. Starkey has been named to the Dean's List and President's List. She has been vice president of Psi Chi and secretary of the Student Behavioral Science Associaton.

Senior Jonathan Stevens, a 2002 Hundred High School graduate, received the Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award. An accounting and finance major, Stevens is the son of Steve and Karen Stevens of Hundred. Stevens has been president of the Student Accountant Society and a member of Delta Mu Delta.

Mae Ellen Sweeney, a 1985 Grace Brethren Academy graduate, received the Women of Fairmont State Scholarship Award. An accounting major, she is the daughter of the late Thomas W. Spence and Delores Spence of Hyattsville, Md.

Jill L. Taylor received the Eleanor M. Ford Outstanding Senior Award in Science and Math and the Coleman-Cobb-Postawa Award.

Sharon Hedrick Tiano received the Harry J. Hadley Award for Teaching Excellence (Elementary).

Junior Christopher S. Underwood, a 2000 Doddridge County High School graduate, received the Mildred Mason Newcome Endowed Scholarship. An English education major, Underwood is the son of Okey Underwood and Saundra Gaskins, both of Salem.

Junior Amy Van Camp, a 2003 graduate of Tyler Consolidated High School, received the Helen Romano Viggiano Elementary Education Endowed Scholarship. An elementary education major, she is the daughter of Ronnie Lee and Charlene Lynn Van Camp of Sistersville. She has been a member of Kappa Delta Pi and participated in America Reads.

Senior Michael S. Ware, a 2002 Martinsburg High School graduate, received the Coleman-Cobb-Postawa Award. A computer science and computer security major, Ware is the son of John Ware Jr. and Dorothy Ware of Martinsburg. He participated in Research Experience for Undergraduates in Multidisciplinary Computing at the University of South Carolina and received the Eleanor M. Ford Outstanding Junior Scholarship, NSF Graduate Fellowship honorable mention and the PROMISE Scholarship.

Chad Williams, a 2002 Elkins High School graduate, received the Outstanding Health and Human Performance Student Award. A physical education and health major, Williams is the son of Ted and Karen Williams of Elkins. A member of the Honors Program and three-year member of the Fairmont State baseball team, Williams received the PROMISE Scholarship, Foundation Academic Scholarship and Fairmont State Undergraduate Scholarship.
