SIFE Team Participates in Regional Competition
The Fairmont State Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Team will test its educational
outreach projects against the projects of other SIFE Teams at the 2006 SIFE Regional
Competition and Career Opportunity Fair on Friday, April 7, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
SIFE encourages students to take what they are learning in the classroom and apply
it to real-life situations, using their knowledge to make life better in their communities
by teaching the principles of free enterprise. The Fairmont State SIFE Team touched
the community this year in several ways, including: teaching elementary school students
about market economics, co-sponsoring two personal finance seminars with Monongahela
Valley Bank and CBC Innovis to help students understand their credit reports, teaching
at-risk high school students entrepreneurship in a year-long program sponsored by
SIFE through a $5,000 grant from the Marcus Foundation, co-sponsoring success skills
workshops with FS Career Services and conducting business ethics sessions in several
FS classes.
At competition, teams are judged on how well their projects taught others the principles
of free enterprise. Regional champions named at competitions held around the country
will present their projects at the 2006 SIFE USA National Exposition, hosted by the
Kansas City Business Community, May 21-23 in Missouri. The national champion in the
four-year division will travel to Paris, France, to compete at SIFE World Cup 2006.
Founded in 1975 and active on more than 1,200 college and university campuses in 48
countries, SIFE is a non-profit organization that works in partnership with business
and higher education to provide students the opportunity to make a difference and
to develop leadership, teamwork and communication skills through learning, practicing
and teaching the principles of free enterprise.
