Intercollegiate Exhibition on Display

The first Intercollegiate Exhibition is now on display in Fairmont State's Brooks Gallery, located on the fourth floor of Wallman Hall. The work will be in the gallery through Oct. 28.

The exhibition was the idea of the students in Marian J. Hollinger's gallery instruction course. She is the Curator of Brooks Gallery. During the course of the semester, students are required to plan an entire exhibition, from the selection of the theme, installation and dismantling, together with all of the small details that make up an exhibition. Last spring, the students asked if their idea--an intercollegiate juried exhibition of works from college and university students around the state--could actually be a part of the 2005-2006 exhibition calendar. The project was approved and the results of the students' efforts are now on display.

Students from West Virginia University, the University of Charleston, West Virginia Wesleyan College and Fairmont State competed for space in the gallery and awards. The juror was Rory Golden, a visiting artist this semester, who has a wide experience in the arts. Golden's book arts and drawings were exhibited in Brooks Gallery last April. A resident of Brooklyn, N.Y., Golden brought to the selection process a wide range of experience in visual media and a number of years' experience as Director of the Center for Book Arts in New York.

Kristin Paul of the University of Charleston won best in show with the painting, "Mick." Merit awards for their collective work in the exhibition were given to Dane Klingaman, also of the University of Charleston, Laura Baisden of West Virginia Wesleyan and Holland Dotts of WVU.
