Guest Pianist Lisa Withers to Perform
Dr. Lisa Withers will appear as guest recitalist at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, in Room
229 of Fairmont State's Wallman Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.
The performance is made possible by Dr. Mary Lynne Bennett, Assistant Professor of
Music at Fairmont State, as a continuation of the recital exchange program that she
began during the last academic year.
Withers is the Chair of the Department of Music at Emory & Henry College where she
teaches piano and music theory. Prior professional appointments include faculty positions
at Augustana College and Louisiana Tech University. Her graduate degrees in piano
pedagogy and piano performance are from West Virginia University and the University
of Michigan. She has performed in master classes for several noted pianists and composers,
including Pascal Devoyon, Eugen Indjic, Nöel Lee, Ursula Oppens, Christopher Taylor
and George Crumb. Her performances at the 1998 French Piano Institute earned her many
accolades and awards. She is also an active collaborative pianist, performing recitals
throughout the region with various musicians, including the recent premiere of an
original work for piano and percussion. Upcoming performances include appearances
in Northern Virginia, South Carolina, Florida and West Virginia.
Withers is active in many professional music organizations and is the current President
of the Blue Ridge Music Teachers Association and the Junior Competitions Chair for
the Virginia Music Teachers Association. She maintains a private studio of pre-college
students, adjudicates at several area piano competitions and festivals and presents
lecture recitals and workshops throughout the region. Her professional and personal
interests include music education advocacy, French piano music, piano pedagogy and
interdisciplinary connections between music, art, literature and philosophy.
Her program will include Hayden's Andante con Variazioni, Bartok's Bagatelles, Op.
6, Chopin's Berceuse, Op. 57, Debussy's Estampes and Scriabin's Sonata Fantasy in
G # minor, Op. 19.
