Collegiate Singers to Perform Concert Oct. 19

Oct 13, 2005

The first choral performance of the 2005-06 concert season at Fairmont State will be Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 8 p.m. in the Turley Center Ballroom. (The location of the concert has been changed from Colebank Hall to the Turley Center Ballroom.)

The concert features the Chamber Choir and Collegiate Singers performing a blend of sacred and secular song from Renaissance madrigals through contemporary arrangements of spirituals. Chamber Choir presentations also include two folksong arrangements, "She's Like The Swallow from Newfoundland," and "Oh, How Full's My Basket" from Russia, sung in Russian.

Collegiate Singers repertoire includes pieces in German and Latin representing various styles. Brahms and Mendelssohn are represented by the German works "In stiller Nacht" and "Verleih' uns Frieden." Latin compositions range from William Byrd's "Ave Verum Corpus" to the contemporary Hungarian composer Deak-Bardos's "Eli, Eli!". A feature of the Latin works is "In Virtute Tua" by the Polish composer Gorczycki, accompanied by two violins, cello and organ. American spirituals arranged by Brazeal Dennard and Moses Hogan will add additional flavors to the main course.

The performance will be conducted by Jeffrey Poland and accompanied by Mary Lynne Bennett. Admission is free and open to the public.
