Campus to Celebrate Constitution Day
In 2004, President George W. Bush signed a bill that designates each Sept. 17 as Constitution
Day. Because Constitution Day falls on a Saturday this year, Fairmont State will celebrate
the holiday on Monday, Sept. 19.
"One of our goals as a public institution is to prepare our students for informed
citizenship," said Dr. Anne Patterson, FSU Provost and Vice President for Academic
Affairs. "Celebrating, honoring and examining the Constitution is one excellent way
to do that."
Several activities are planned for Monday, Sept. 19:
* Dr. Deanna Shields and the Department of Social Science have put together an informative
brochure, which features the Bill of Rights, some interesting facts about the Constitution,
a self-test and the URLs for some web sites on the U.S. Constitution. Brochures will
be available on the second floor of the Falcon Center and at the Gaston Caperton Center.
* A display incorporating facsimiles of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence
will be open for viewing from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. on the second floor of the Falcon
Center.
* Dr. Gerald Bobango of the History Department will give a lecture at 3 p.m. in Room
320 of the Education Building. Bobango plans to make a presentation of about 40 minutes,
and then allow time for discussion and questions.
