Harvey Named Dean of Graduate Studies
Fairmont State University has announced that Dr. Richard Harvey has been named Dean
of Graduate Studies.
"Our graduate program offerings and enrollment have grown a great deal since the
creation of the graduate school two years ago, and I am confident that Rick's leadership
will continue that growth," said Dr. Daniel J. Bradley, FSU President.
Enrollment in the graduate school has increased to about 350 students. FSU offers
two graduate degree programs in education: a Master of Education (M.Ed.) and a Master
of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.). In collaboration with Marshall University, FSU offers
a Master of Science degree in Nursing with an emphasis in nursing education. Also
in collaboration with MU, FSU offers a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice.
"I'm excited about this opportunity to manage the graduate programs at FSU," Harvey
said. "I believe FSU is uniquely positioned to provide access to quality graduate
programs and opportunities for continued professional and personal development. I
hope to rely on my entrepreneurial background to develop new and innovative graduate
programs."
Harvey joined the faculty of Fairmont State in 1988. He is a full professor of Finance
and Business Law. He previously served as the Coordinator of the Finance and Business
Law department within the FSU School of Business where he designed curriculum, received
multiple online course development grants, founded a student finance organization
that operates as an investment club and chaired or served on numerous committees including
Faculty Senate, Liberal Studies and Strategic Planning.
Prior to joining the faculty, Harvey served as the Director of the Fairmont State
Small Business Development Center. He regularly provides seminars on topics such as
financial management, estate planning and commercial law. He often serves as an expert
witness in cases involving investments and broker misrepresentation.
Harvey also practices elder law providing estate planning, wills, trusts and Medicaid
planning assistance. He maintains membership in the American Bar Association, West
Virginia State Bar and the National Association of Elder Law Attorneys.
His educational background includes a juris doctorate from West Virginia University
where he received the Excellence for the Future Award, a Master of Business Administration
degree with a specialization in Finance from WVU and two bachelor degrees from WVU.
Harvey resides in Morgantown with his wife, Beth Ann, an accountant, and daughter
Cearah. His daughter Rachel lives in Baltimore and works as a research assistant for
Johns Hopkins University.
