Swim Classes Offered
Fairmont State students, faculty and staff, their immediate families and the general
public can sign up to be part of the Aquatic Program at the new Student Activity Center
on the main FS campus.
Class sizes will be limited to six students. The cost for each level of course is
$45 for the general public and $35 for FS students, faculty, staff and their immediate
families. Lessons will be offered in the morning and afternoon during each of four
sessions. Session 1 will be offered from June 6-16, Session 2 from June 20-30, Session
3 from July 5-14, Session 4 from July 18-28.
Swimmers will have 35-minute sessions at different times based on the swimmers' level
of knowledge. Except for the Preschool and Parent/Toddler levels, classes are designed
for those 5 and older.
Morning Lessons (Mondays through Thursdays):
Level 3, Level 5 and Preschool (ages 3 and 4) lessons will be offered from 9-9:35
a.m.
Level 1, Level 2 and Level 4 will be offered from 9:45-10:20 a.m.
Level 2, Level 4 and Parent/Toddler will be offered from 10:25-11 a.m.
Afternoon Lessons (Mondays through Thursdays):
Level 3, Level 5 and Preschool will be offered from 4-4:35 p.m.
Level 1, Level 2 and Level 4 will be offered from 4:45-5:20 p.m.
Level 4, Adult Learn to Swim and Parent/Toddler will be offered from 5:25-6 p.m.
The level descriptions are as follows:
Level 1: Water Exploration * The objective is to help students feel comfortable in
the water and to enjoy the water safely.
Preschool and Parent/Toddler * This class is similar to Level 1.
Adult Learn to Swim * The objective is for adults to learn how to swim if they don't
know how or to help those who do know how to swim to improve upon their strokes. It
is not a fitness/training course.
Level 2: Primary Skills * The objective is to give students success with fundamental
skills. Students learn to float without support and to recover to a vertical position.
Level 3: Stroke Readiness * The objective is to build on the skills in Level 2 by
providing additional guided practice. The students will learn the front crawl and
back crawl. They will be introduced to the elementary backstroke and the fundamentals
of treading water.
Level 4: Stroke Development * The objective is to develop confidence in the strokes
learned and to improve other aquatic skills. The breaststroke, sidestroke and basic
turning at the wall will be introduced.
Level 5: Stroke Refinement * The objective is coordination and refinement of key
strokes. Butterfly, open turns and feet-first surface dives will be introduced.
Level 6: Skill Proficiency * The objective is to polish strokes so students swim
them with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness. Increased endurance, along
with the introduction of pike and tuck surface dives are the goals.
Level 7: Advanced Skills * The objective is to perfect strokes and to develop good
fitness habits. Participants are urged to use aquatic skills throughout life to maintain
healthy physical fitness.
Aquatic Fitness classes will be offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6:30
to 7:30 a.m. May 16 through Aug. 12. There will be no class on May 30 or July 4. Individuals
can pay $3 for each class they attend or $70 for the entire term, $60 for FS students,
faculty, staff and their immediate families.

368-7223. No Water Aerobics classes are scheduled at this time, but the Aquatic Program
staff would like to know if there would be interest in such classes.
