Spring Juried Student Exhibition on Display
The Spring Juried Student Exhibition is now on display in the Tower Room of Wallman
Hall at Fairmont State.
A Juried Student Exhibition is held each semester, with visiting artists and art
educators as the jurors. This semester's juror was Dr. Victoria J. Fergus, Associate
Professor of Art Education at West Virginia University. The exhibition will remain
open until the end of April.
This year's student award-winners were Lauren Adams for her drawing, "The Rays;"
Elizabeth Urse for her ceramic entry, "You Can't Have This Glaze;" Jessica Bright
for her sculpture, "Nude Woman;" Kevin Smith for his photograph, "Reflected Nature;"
and Stacie Haythorn for her three small paintings, "Three Landscapes." Honorable mention
certificates were awarded to Jennifer Brozy, Jessica Bright, Lisa McCullough, Regina
Depoy, Judy Wilson, Kevin Smith and Brianna Allen.
"Participation in such exhibitions is an important part of the art students' experience
at Fairmont State," said Marian J. Hollinger, Fine Arts Advocate, art instructor and
curator.
"Students often have an opportunity to interact with the jurors and to learn about
their own work from the juror's outside opinion. In this way, students are discouraged
from becoming too satisfied with their own level of development. To compete with others
for an award made by a juror who has not seen the students' work prior to the jury
process means to put one's talent and ideas on the line, always good experience for
the students."
The exhibition may be viewed during the regular gallery hours: Mondays through Fridays
from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For special viewing arrangements, call Curator Marian J. Hollinger
at (304) 367-4300. Admission to the exhibition is free and open to the public.
