FSU Students Honored with Academic Awards

Fairmont State University honored students for their academic achievement and named scholarship recipients at the 28th annual Academic Awards Ceremony on Friday, April 15.

Many of the awards and scholarships presented at the banquet were made possible through gifts to the Fairmont State Foundation, Inc.

Caroline L. Ammons, a 2001 graduate of North Marion High School, received the Mary B. and Edgar N. Jaynes Endowed Scholarship. An accounting/business administration major, she is the daughter of Leonard and Rebecca Ammons of Fairview. She is a member of the Student Accountant Society.

April M. Anderson, a 1997 graduate of Weir High School, received the Geraldine and Horace Belmear Outstanding African-American Student Award. A graphic design major, she is the daughter of Keith and Jean Howard of Weirton, W.Va. She has been a member of the Black Student Union and was a Freshman Counselor.

Jeremy W. Bartholow, a 2001 graduate of East Fairmont High School, received the Bachelor of Science Academic Achievement Award in Technology Education. A senior technology education major, he is the son of Donald and Susan Bartholow of Fairmont. He is a member of the Technology Education Collegiate Association.

Lindsey J. Bennett, a 2001 graduate of Fairmont Senior High School, received the Outstanding Senior in Accounting Award. A senior accounting major, she is the daughter of Gary and Barbara Bennett of Fairmont. She is vice president of the Student Accountant Society, a Becker CPA Review Campus Representative, a volunteer income tax assistant, a student member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and a student member of the West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants. She is a recipient of the WVSCPA Outstanding Accounting Senior Award.

Leslie A. Bledsoe, a 2002 graduate of Calvary Christian School, received the Conley CPA Group Accounting Excellence Award. A junior accounting major, she is the daughter of David and Trujean Bledsoe of Fairmont. She is a member of the Honors Program, served as vice president of Campus Light and is the recipient of the Valedictorian Scholarship and the Student Affairs/Student Government Travel Scholarship to Scotland and Ireland.

Cicely Jo Bosley of Fairmont, a 2001 graduate of Braxton County High School, received the Outstanding Senior Oral Communication Student Award. A senior oral communication/English education major, she is the daughter of Burton Bosley of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Lois Zagha Maddix. She is a member of Sigma Tau Delta, Masquers and is a recipient of the Blanche Kinney Scholarship.

Marcus D. Bramer, a 2002 graduate of Liberty High School, received the Wendell G. Hardway Distinguished Scholarship for Teacher Education. A senior elementary education major, he is the son of Mark and Charmaine Bramer of Clarksburg. He has been on the Dean's List for six semesters and the President's List for three semesters. He is a recipient of the Helen RomanoViggiano Scholarship and is a participant in America/FS Reads.

Michelle J. Bright, a 1985 graduate of Fairmont Senior High School, received the Stark A. Wilmoth Outstanding Student Teacher Award. A December 2004 graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education (biology/computer science), she is the daughter of the late David A. Henderson and Jim and Vicki K. Summers of Worthington. She and her husband, Richard "Dion" Bright, reside in Enterprise. She is a member of Beta Beta Beta.

Jared Brown, a 1995 graduate of Washington Irving High School, received the Mildred Mason Newcome Endowed Scholarship. A senior education/English major, he is the son of Garry W. and Melanie Brown of Clarksburg. He and his wife, Albani St. Martin Brown, reside in Clarksburg.

Tricia N. Bunnell, a 2000 graduate of Williamstown High School, received the Outstanding Senior in Business Award. A senior accounting/finance major, she is the daughter of Linda Bunnell of Williamstown, W.Va. She is a member of the Student Accountant Society and the Honors Association.

Jason A. Buttrey, a 2001 graduate of Williamstown High School, received the Baccalaureate Achievement Award in Architectural Engineering Technology. A senior architectural engineering technology major, he is the son of Charles Buttrey and Waynette Miracle, both of Williamstown, W.Va. He is a member of the American Institute of Architecture Students and Epsilon Pi Tau. He is an AIA W.Va. Jeffrey Mayfield Scholarship Competition Winner and is the recipient of the AIAS FSU Design 5 Studio Competition Merit Award.

Amanda L. Clark, a 2000 graduate of Nicholas County High School, received the National Business Education Association Merit Award. A December 2004 graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business education, she is the daughter of Timothy and Marion McClung of Mt. Nebo, W.Va. She and her husband, Michael Clark, reside in Fairmont. She is a recipient of the National Business Education Association Merit Award.

Dustin T. Cogar, a 2002 graduate of Lewis County High School, received the Walter F. Phillips Jr. Endowed Scholarship. A junior technology education major, he is the son of Terry and Donna Cogar of Weston, W.Va. He is a three-year letterman with the Fighting Falcons football team and is a member of the Technology Education Collegiate Association.

Robin Contic, a 1981 graduate of Central Preston High School, received the Bachelor of Arts Academic Achievement Award in Family and Consumer Sciences. A senior family and consumer sciences education major, she is the daughter of Irene Reckart of Kingwood, W.Va. She and her husband, Joseph R. Contic, reside in Kingwood. She is a member of the Family and Consumer Sciences Club and the Family and Consumer Sciences Honorary.

Kari S. Eckleberry, a 2003 graduate of Oak Glen High School, received the Louis Schoolnic Endowed Scholarship. A sophomore business management major, she is the daughter of Mark Eckleberry and Sue Fisher, both of Chester, W.Va.

Kelly L. Gank, a 2001 graduate of Southern Garrett High School, received the Baccalaureate Achievement Award in Graphics Technology. A senior graphics technology major, she is the daughter of Jeffrey L. and Deborah L. Gank of Oakland, Md. She is a member of Delta Xi Omicron Sorority and the Collegiate Society of Journalists and has been on the Dean's List.

Nora J. Grant, a 1980 G.E.D. recipient, received the Melva Campbell Hess Award. A senior family and consumer sciences major, she is the daughter of Delores Westfall of Clarksburg. She and her husband, Robert L. Grant, Sr., reside in Clarksburg. She is president of the Family and Consumer Sciences Association and secretary to the WVAFCS Pre-Professional Member Section.

Derwin E. Hampton, a 1985 graduate of Redeemer High School, received the Mary Esther Jackson Scholarship in English. A senior English major, he is the son of Peggy Hampton of Metairie, La. He and his wife, Dr. Michele Lindsey, reside in Fairmont. He is vice president of the FS chapter of Sigma Tau Delta.

Kelli B. Harper, a 2002 graduate of Pendleton County High School, received the Nancy Marie Duling Memorial Teacher Education Endowed Scholarship. A senior elementary education major, she is the daughter of Lannie and Wanda Harper of Seneca Rocks, W.Va. She is a member of Kappa Delta Pi and is a recipient of the Donald Hoyt Scholarship, the PROMISE Scholarship and is a past recipient of the Nancy Marie Duling Memorial Teacher Education Endowed Scholarship. She has been on the President's List and has been an America/FS Reads coach for three semesters.

Seldenia E. Harris, a 1991 graduate of Philip Barbour High School, received the PEO Sisterhood Scholarship. A senior secondary education major, she resides in Fairmont. She was on the Dean's List for the fall 2004 semester.

William D. Hawkins, a 1992 graduate of Williamstown High School, received the Baccalaureate Achievement Award in Electronics Engineering Technology. A senior electronics engineering technology major, he is the son of Robert W. Hawkins of Williamstown, W.Va., and Linda L. Lott of Elizabeth, W.Va.

Kristin E. House, a 2001 graduate of Robert C. Byrd High School, received the Outstanding Student in Political Science Dr. Yu San Wang Award. A senior political science major, she is the daughter of Roger and Susan House of Mount Clare, W.Va. She is president of the Political Science Association, president of the College Republicans, a past secretary of the Honors Association and a member of Pi Gamma Mu, Pi Sigma Alpha and Students for Bush.

David J. Johnson received the James A. LaRue Mathematics Award and the Eleanor M. Ford Outstanding Senior in Science Award.

Billy J. Kennedy, a 2000 graduate of West Greene High School, received the Baccalaureate Achievement Award in Mechanical Engineering Technology. A mechanical engineering technology major, he is the son of Lloyd and Dorothy Kennedy of New Freeport, Pa. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, has been on the Dean's List for four semesters and on the President's List for the fall 2004 semester.

Meagan E. Loss, a 2003 graduate of Lincoln High School, received the Ruth Marie Skaggs Scholarship Award. A sophomore family and consumer sciences major, she is the daughter of John and Judith Loss of Shinnston.

Sarah P. Mauller received the Excellence in Spanish Award.

Jill R. Mehaulic, a 2001 graduate of Fairmont Senior High School, received the Baccalaureate Achievement Award in Safety Engineering Technology. A senior safety and environmental engineering technology major, she is the daughter of Sharon Martin-Mehaulic of Fairmont. She is president of the American Society of Safety Engineers and a member of Epsilon Pi Tau, Student Government and the FS Mentor Program. She has attended leadership conferences.

Courtney L. Miller, a 1993 graduate of Fairmont Senior High School, received the Outstanding Senior in English Award. A senior English major, she is the daughter of Kenneth and Judith Miller of Fairmont. She has been on the Dean's List for each of her semesters at FSU.

Sarah J. Miller, a 2001 graduate of Wheeling Park High School, received the T.J. & Madge Herndon Pearse Memorial Endowed Scholarship. A senior elementary education (mathematics) major, she is the daughter of Ronald P. and Jody L. Miller of Valley Grove, W.Va. She is vice president of Kappa Delta Pi and has been a Freshman Counselor and math tutor. She is a National Collegiate Education Award Winner and was selected as an outstanding student in her major to be featured on the FS web site.

Jordan W. Moran, a 2003 graduate of Grafton High School, received the Outstanding Freshman Chemistry Award. A chemistry major, he is the son of Charles and Karol Moran of Grafton, W.Va.

Andrew R. Morgan, a 2003 graduate of Liberty High School, received the Louis Schoolnic Endowed Scholarship. A sophomore accounting major, he is the son of Terry R. and Cheryl A. Morgan of Clarksburg. He is a two-year member of the Fighting Falcons football team and a member of the Student Accountant Society.

Beth A. Morris, a 2001 graduate of Fairmont Senior High School, received the Farley-Branham Award. A senior physical and health education major, she is the daughter of Robert and Marlene Morris of Rivesville. She is vice president of Kappa Delta Pi, a committee chairperson for the Health and Physical Education Majors Club, a student representative for WVAHPERD and a member of Phi Epsilon Kappa. Her past awards include the Bea N. Orr Outstanding Student Award and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Scholarship.

Marlene M. Morris, a 1971 graduate of Fairmont Senior High School, received the Bachelor of Science Academic Achievement Award in Family and Consumer Sciences. A senior family and consumer sciences (child development) major, she is the daughter of Frank Piscitelli of Fairmont and the late Eula Piscitelli. She and her husband, Robert Morris, reside in Fairmont. She has been president and vice president of the Family and Consumer Sciences Honorary and an advisory committee member for the Early Childhood Associate of Applied Science Degree Program for FSC&TC. Her past awards include the Presidential Award for Excellence in Scholarship, the Ruth Marie Skaggs Scholarship for Family and Consumer Sciences and the Outstanding Child Development Student Award.

Melissa A. Moury, a 1994 graduate of Preston High School, received the Outstanding Senior Chemistry Award, funded by the William C. Ruoff Memorial Fund. A senior chemistry major, she is the daughter of David and Darlene Bolyard of Moatsville, W.Va. She and her husband, Eric Moury, reside in Tunnelton, W.Va. She is a member of the American Chemical Society and a recipient of the Freshman Chemistry Award and the Junior Chemistry Award.

Frank M. Muldoon, a 2003 graduate of Pike View High School, received the Bachelor of Science Academic Achievement Award in Aviation Technology. A junior aviation administration major, he is the son of Bob O'Quinn and Elizabeth Muldoon, both of Princeton, W.Va. He is a member of the Honors Program, treasurer for Alpha Eta Rho and the Marching Band. He has been on the President's List and the Dean's List.

Ellen T. Mulligan of Fairmont, a 1974 graduate of Parkersburg High School, received the Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award. A senior management major (human resources), she is the daughter of the late Michael G. and Elinor T. Mulligan of Parkersburg, W.Va. She is a charter member of the student chapter of the Society for Human Resources Management and has also served as historian, vice president and president of that organization. She is a past recipient of the Fairmont BPW Scholarship, the Maroon & White Scholarship, the PEO Scholarship and the Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award.

Gabor I. Nagy, a 1997 graduate of Dobo Istvan Gimnazium Eger, 3300, received the Baccalaureate Achievement Award in Civil Engineering Technology and the Outstanding International Student Award. A senior civil engineering major, he is the son of Gabor I. Nagy and Gaborne Nagy Maria Toth of Egerszalok, Hungary. He is a member of the Amercian Society of Civil Engineers Student Club and has served as chairman of the club's steel bridge team for the Virginia's Conference competition for two years. He is a member of Epsilon Pi Tau and Phi Theta Kappa. He has been on the President's List for four semesters and the Dean's List for five semesters.

Meghan B. Phillips, a 2002 graduate of Magnolia High School, received the William and Doretha Clayton Barns Prize in History. A junior history major, she is the daughter of Robert and Deborah Phillips of New Martinsville, W.Va. She is a member of the varsity women's cross country team, the Honors Program, vice president of the Honors Association, senior senator with Student Government, a member of Pi Gamma Mu, a member of Kappa Delta Pi, a Homecoming queen candidate, a member of the Political Science Association, a member of Phi Alpha Theta and a member of the Student Athletic Committee.

Teresa L. Pollack received The Alliance Francaise Excellence in French Award and the John Teahan Memorial Scholarship.

William D. Powers, a senior sociology major, received the Outstanding Sociology Student Award. He and his wife, Candi Powers, reside in Elkins, W.Va.

Amy N. Reed, a 2001 graduate of Parkersburg High School, received the Sigma Alpha Iota Honor Certificate and the Sigma Alpha Iota Scholastic Award. A music education major, she is the daughter of Randy Reed of Mineral Wells, W.Va., and Cindy and Duane Deem of Ripley, W.Va. She has been an Honors recitalist for two years, president of the Music Educators National Conference, president and secretary of Sigma Alpha Iota, treasurer of Kappa Kappa Psi, a concerto soloist for two years with the Fairmont State University Community Orchestra and a winner of the Outstanding Band Member Award.

Timothy B. Riley received the Outstanding Student in Computer Science Award, funded by the Ernest W. Frye Memorial Fund.

Karen Lee Ross received The Altruce of Clarksburg International Inc. Scholarship. She and her husband, Keith W. Ross, reside in Wallace, W.Va.

Rachel C. Skubis, a 2002 graduate of East Fairmont High School, received the Outstanding Journalism Student Award. A senior English education/journalism education major, she is the daughter of Albert and Brenda Skubis of Fairmont. She is a member of the Collegiate Singers, the Mound (FS yearbook) staff, a student representative for the School of Education for an NCATE national accreditation visit and a spring 2004 presenter at the Celebration of Honors: A Symposium of Undergraduate Academic Excellence. She was second place winner at the 13th Annual Literature Symposium for Undergraduate Students at West Virginia University and a member of the Society of Collegiate Journalists.

Jamie L. Smith received the Outstanding Senior Biology Student Award.

Cheryl A. Skotnicki, a 1981 graduate of Morgantown High School, received the Kappa Delta Pi Outstanding Elementary Education Award. A graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education, she is the daughter of Bill Bolyard and Carol Powers, both of Morgantown. She and her husband, Andre Skotnicki, reside in Morgantown. She is a member of Kappa Delta Pi and a recipient of the Elementary Algebra Award, the FS Undergraduate Scholarship, the Eddie and Betty Barrett Scholarship and the Kappa Delta Pi Outstanding Elementary Student Teacher Award.

Shasta D. Talkington, a 2002 graduate of East Fairmont High School, received the Outstanding Graduating Senior Psychology Student Award. A senior psychology major, she is the daughter of Mark and Doris Talkington of Fairmont. She is a member of Psi Chi and the Student Psychology Association.

Tracy D. Taylor, a 1995 graduate of East Fairmont High School, received the Women of Fairmont State Scholarship Award. A junior English major, she is the daughter of Tom Taylor of Monongah and Juddy McMasters of Fairmont. She and her husband, Amir Cehajic, reside in Fairmont. She is a member of Sigma Tau Delta, a Marion County CASA volunteer, a volunteer coordinator for Energy Express and a Lions Club "Sight Night" volunteer.

Matthew J. Thorn, a 2001 graduate of Preston High School, received the Eleanor M. Ford Outstanding Junior Endowed Scholarship. A chemistry major, he is the son of Daniel J. Thorn of Tunnelton, W.Va. and the late Vicki Thorn. He is a past recipient of the Outstanding Freshman Chemistry Award and the FSU Academic Scholarship.

Kerri M. Toothman, a 1995 graduate of East Fairmont High School, received the Criminal Justice Achievement Award. A criminal justice major, she is the daughter of the late Michael Leeson and Sharon and Garry Wright of Fairmont. She and her husband, Richard Toothman, reside in Fairmont. She is a member of Alpha Phi Sigma, Pi Gamma Mu and Lambda Alpha Epsilon.

Julie A. Volpe, a 2000 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, received the Outstanding Health and Human Performance Student Award. A senior exercise science major, she is the daughter of John and Kathy Volpe of Pittsburgh. She is a member of Kappa Delta Pi, has been vice president and president of the Health and Physical Education Majors Club, a member of the 2004 Homecoming court and a member of Phi Epsilon Kappa. She is a past recipient of the Maroon & White Scholarship and the FSU Undergraduate Scholarship. She has been on the Dean's List for six semesters and the President's List for two semesters.

Reginna L. Wagoner, a 1993 graduate of Maranatha Christian Academy, received the Eddie and Betty Barrett Endowed Scholarship. A senior elementary education major, she is the daughter of David Wilfong of Enterprise and Sharron Cool of Morgantown. She and her husband, Jonathan Wagoner, reside in Morgantown. She is a member of the Beta Omega Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi.

Christina M. Wills, a 1999 graduate of Fairmont Senior High School, received the Claude and Stacie Morris Rader Nursing Endowed Scholarship. A senior nursing major, she is the daughter of Kenneth and Sharon Wills of Baxter, W.Va.

Sarah E. Wine, a 2000 graduate of James Wood Ridge School, received the Outstanding Senior in Art Education Award. A senior art education major, she is the daughter of Dan Wine of Gore, Va., and Wendy M. and Greg Bancroft of Middletown, Va.

Emily L. Wymer, a 2002 graduate of Winfield High School, received the Helen Romano Viggiano Elementary Education Endowed Scholarship. A junior elementary education major, she is the daughter of the late Jeff Wymer and Lynn Wymer of Winfield, W.Va. She is a former FS softball player and a teacher assistant at Kids-R-Special Child Care Center.
