Students Participate in Profiling Seminar
Dean Van Bibber, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice for Fairmont State Community
& Technical College, and a group of FS criminal justice students recently attended
a one-day seminar for students on criminal personality profiling and forensic analysis
in Fairfax, Va.
The event called "Through the Eyes of a Profiler" was presented by the George Mason
University Office of Continuing Professional Education. Two of the world's best profilers,
Robert K. Ressler and Roy Hazelwood, presented at the seminar.
Ressler worked for the FBI for 20 years and conducted in-depth interviews with such
infamous killers as Charles Manson, John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy and Jefrey Dahmer.
He is currently the Director of Forensic Behavioral Services International.
Hazelwood served with the FBI for 22 years and was one of the original profilers
in the Behavioral Science Unit at Quantico. Due to his influence, the investigation
of aberrant sexual offenses is now an integral part of FBI training. He is presently
the vice president of the Academy Group Inc., a forensic consulting firm.
"Students found out what it takes to be a profiler and information on the job market,"
Van Bibber said. "Most profiling jobs are part-time. Profiling is just one of many
tools. They also learned about linkage analysis, which is connecting crimes especially
homicides."
Fairmont State offers associate degrees in criminal justice and homeland security;
bachelor's degrees in criminal justice, forensics and intelligence research and analysis;
and a master's degree in criminal justice in collaboration with Marshall University.
