Student Affairs Hall of Fame Banquet Planned
In the second annual event, the Fairmont State Student Affairs Office will honor the
dedication of former employees to the lives of students.
The Fairmont State Student Affairs Hall of Fame Awards Banquet is planned for 6:30
p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at Westchester Village, 1825 Locust Ave., Fairmont.
Inductees will be William D. Shaffer, who served as Director of Financial Aid from
1966 to 2000, and Lois M. Laughlin, who served as Associate Dean of Student Affairs
from 1970 to 2002. Frank Pulice Jr., who served as Director of Food Services from
1967 to 1993, will be honored with the Distinguished Citizen Award.
"The Student Affairs Office provides valuable services to students throughout their
college years," said Michael Belmear, Vice President for Student Affairs. "These services
include orientation, counseling, crisis intervention, housing, multicultural affairs,
career planning and placement, health services, mentoring, Student Government and
other student activities. The Hall of Fame event has been designed to recognize the
efforts of past employees and to encourage present employees to carry on the tradition
of excellence."

William D. Shaffer
William "Bill" D. Shaffer was an extremely valued member of the Student Affairs Office
and had many friends at Fairmont State and in the Fairmont community. He is a graduate
of Fairmont Senior High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Fairmont
State and a Master of Arts in Psychology from West Virginia University. His career
at FS included serving as an Assistant Professor of Psychology and as from Director
of Financial Aid from 1966 to 2000. He was also employed by the Western District Guidance
Clinic and the Harrison County Guidance Center.
Shaffer has three sons: Paul Shaffer and his wife Lori of Dunbar, W.Va.; Mike Shaffer
and his wife Amy of Asheville, N.C.; and Ryan Shaffer of Key West, Fla.
Lois Muto Laughlin
Lois Muto Laughlin is a graduate of Fairmont Senior High School, and she earned a
Bachelor of Arts in Education (Mathematics and English) from Fairmont State and a
Master of Arts in Education (Counseling and Guidance) from West Virginia University.
Her work experience includes many years in education: teacher of mathematics at Fairmont
Junior High School and Fairmont Senior High School, guidance counselor at Monongah
Junior High School and Miller Junior High School, Dean of Women at FS and Associate
Dean of Students at FS. She served as Assistant to the President from 1978 to 2001,
when she retired.
Laughlin's current memberships include the following: president of the FS Foundation
Inc. Board of Directors, vice president of P.E.O., the Fairmont Senior High School
Foundation, the Book Chat Book Club, St. Therese Society for Catholic Women, Rotary
Club of Fairmont, Gamma Chi Chi Alumnae Association, Sustaining Member of the Junior
League of Fairmont, FS Letterman's Association and the FS Alumni Association. She
is a past president of the Marion County United Way Board of Directors and a former
member of the Union Mission Board, the CB&T Tennis League, the Bicentennial Celebration
Committee, the Junior League of Fairmont and the board of the Green Hills Country
Club.
She is the wife of William M. Laughlin, retired Associate Professor of Economics
at FS.
Frank Pulice Jr.
Frank Pulice Jr. is a graduate of Monongah High School and the Greenbrier Cooking
School, and he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Fairmont State. For eight years,
he served in the U.S. military. He has had a long career in the food service industry
and has been extremely active in service to the community with numerous volunteer
affiliations. His job experience includes Assistant Manager of The Palace Restaurant
in Fairmont; Manager of the local Elks Lodge; Head Waiter at the paradise Valley Country
Club in Phoenix, Ariz.; Owner/Manager of the Town House Restaurant in Fairmont; Owner/Manager
of the White Tower Restaurant in Fairmont; and Director of Food Services for FS. Since
1993, he has been the Development Director for the Fairmont General Hospital Foundation
Inc. and has a long history of service to the hospital.
Although he retired from FS in 1993 with 26 years of service, Pulice's dedication
to FS continues today. He is a member of the FS Foundation Inc. Board of Directors,
and is a past president and vice president of the FS Alumni Association Board of Directors,
as well as a past member of the FS Letterman's Association Board of Directors and
a past member of the Board of Advisors to the President of FS. He was a member of
the search committee to select the 10th FS president (Dr. Robert J. Dillman). A charter
member of Theta Delta Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, he was the chapter's
first president and has been a board member and served as advisor to the fraternity
for 26 years. He was chairman of the Food Service Committee at the FS Dining Hall
and the Student Center and a member of the Student Affairs Council. In 1993, he was
honored as the first recipient of the Alumni of Achievement Award by the FS Alumni
Association. In 1994, the Frank Pulice Jr. Scholarship was established. In 2001, the
Dining Room in the Dining Hall was named in his honor.
Pulice and his wife, Katherine, have one daughter, Diane. Diane Pulice Burnside is
the wife of Philip E. Burnside, and they have two sons, Anthony and Jonathan.
