English Majors to Participate in Symposium
Four English majors at Fairmont State University have been selected to participate
in the annual Literature Symposium for Undergraduate Students on Saturday, Feb. 19,
according to Dr. Rhonda Lemke Sanford, Chair of the Department of Language & Literature.
Derwin Hampton, a senior originally from New Orleans, La., will present his paper,
"The Right Way, Marlow's Visions of Colonialism in Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness,"
which he originally wrote for a class on British literature taught by Sanford.
Jared St. Martin Brown, a native of Clarksburg, is a senior majoring in English education.
He will read his paper "The Serpent in Othello's Eden." His paper was written for
the Shakespeare class taught by Dr. Donna Long.
Rachel Skubis, a junior from Fairmont, will read "The Real Soot of Chimney Sweeping,"
a paper she wrote in British Literature II taught by Sanford.
Sarah Mauller will present "The Composition of a Thought: Macbeth's Credulity in
Accepting the Witches' Prophecies." A senior from Fairmont, Mauller wrote her paper
for a course on Shakespeare taught by Long in the spring of 2004.
The annual Literature Symposium, now in its 13th year, is sponsored by the English
Department of West Virginia State University.
