Brown vs. Board of Education Discussion Set
The Fairmont State Student Affairs Office is presenting a Brown vs. Board of Education
Panel Discussion.
The event is planned for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, in Multi-media Room A of the
Ruth Ann Musick Library on the main FS campus. Admission is free, and the event is
open to the public.
On May 17, 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled that "separate but equal"
was unconstitutional. The justices ruled in favor of integration for public schools.
A panel of guests will discuss the effect locally and the mood of the times.
"Please join us in this anniversary celebration to mark the most significant stride
in favor of civil liberties taken by Americans," said Laurie Johnston, Director of
Student Activities.
Michael Belmear, Vice President for Student Affairs, will serve as moderator for
the event. Panel members will include Anna McCright, Director of 612 MAC in Fairmont;
Charlotte Meade, retired public school teacher; Bob Delorenzo, West Fairmont High
School coach, who was a student in the 1950s; Anthony "Skippy" Delegadi, who was a
student in the 1950s; and Gabrielle St. Leger, West Virginia University professor
of education.
