Fairmont State University is committed to making a difference in the lives of all of our students. Though we strive to offer a transformative, quality education at a reasonable price, we know the cost of attending a university can present a challenge.
Financial Aid Services is dedicated to helping you overcome that challenge and pay for school. We offer several types of aid, including:
Federal and State Grants are available and generally do not have to be paid back. Completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is necessary to determine eligibility for these grants. Fairmont State currently receives funds from the States of: West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. You should check with your state’s education office or your high school counselor to see if they allow you to use your state grant funds in a state other than your home state.
Student loans are available from the Federal government and private sources. Federal Government loans are available to all students who complete the FAFSA and meet the eligibility criteria. Federal student loans and parent (PLUS) loans are borrowed directly from the U.S. Department of Education. Private loans are based on credit-worthiness and generally require a co-signer. Loans require repayment.
Scholarships are awarded based on need, merit, and talent and most require an application. Many scholarships have deadline dates that vary by scholarship. Students may receive scholarships from Private Sources, Federal and State Funds, or from Fairmont State. Most scholarships do not need paid back.
Student worker positions are available in almost every office and department at Fairmont State.
Federal Work-Study provides part-time jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses. The program encourages community service work and work related to the student’s course of study. If you’re interested in getting a Federal Work-Study job while you’re enrolled in college or career school, make sure you complete the FAFSA by March 1 and indicate on the application that you are interested in work study. Federal Work-Study funds are awarded based on the March 1 priority date and financial need.
Each type of aid has different requirements (you can find more info by viewing the pages for each), but whichever type proves to be the best fit for you, your first step is to fill out your Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA.

If this is your first time completing the FAFSA you will need to create a StudentAid.gov account (formerly known as an FSA ID) NOTE: It may take up to three business days for your identity to be verrified for the account to be created.

If you are admitted to Fairmont State University as a freshman and successfully apply for aid, you should begin receiving your award packages in January. If you're a returning student, you will begin receiving award packages in May, as long as your application is complete and you are making satisfactory academic progress
Fairmont State is pleased to provide the student aid calculator to assist you in estimating your costs to attend. Results are based on 2023-2024 Estimated Cost of Attendance figures and student aid eligibility requirements which are subject to change. These results should assist you in determining an estimate of your out-of-pocket expense to attend Fairmont State.
