Donation from Novelis Inc. to Aid Campus Recycling Efforts

A $10,000 donation from Novelis Inc. will aid recycling efforts on the shared main campus of Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College.

The donation was made by the Novelis Fairmont plant as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility program known as Novelis Neighbor.

“Novelis is committed to helping create a better environment through supporting recycling initiatives in communities around the world,” said Dana Hulme, Novelis Fairmont’s Human Resources Manager and Novelis Neighbor Site Champion. “We are excited to support Fairmont State’s and Pierpont’s efforts to increase recycling rates on campus and educate students on the environmental benefits of recycling.”

A portion of the funding will go toward the purchase of a crusher for large aluminum cans for use by Aladdin Food Management Services employees in the campus Dining Hall. Other funds will be used to purchase additional recycling bins and signage for campus and to develop educational programming about recycling opportunities.

“We are very pleased to be able to join FSU and Pierpont in yet another important partnership. The weekly volume of metal cans we will provide for recycling is substantial. This new program will have a major positive impact on campus recycling activities plus provide ongoing program funding,” said John Kellar, Resident District Manager for Aladdin at FSU and Pierpont.

Dr. Don Trisel, Dr. Erica Harvey and Dr. Steve Roof of the FSU College of Science and Technology serve as the faculty advisers for the student organization Students Taking Action in Nature’s Defense (S.T.A.N.D.), which has spearheaded recycling efforts on campus. Since 1998, S.T.A.N.D. has been dedicated to raising awareness and enriching the development of a healthy environment on campus and in the Fairmont community.

“Over the past 14 years, S.T.A.N.D. has worked with the campus Physical Plant employees, custodial services, faculty, staff and students to gradually increase our recycling efforts on campus,” Trisel said. “At first, we were just recycling aluminum cans in a few buildings. Then we added office paper, plastic bottles, glass bottles and cardboard in the academic buildings and residence halls. This generous gift from Novelis will help us to expand our efforts to include campus dining facilities in the Falcon Center.”

The FSU and Pierpont Physical Plant also lends critical support to make the campus more “green.” The campus hosts a recycling trailer to help sort aluminum cans, plastic bottles, newspapers and glass for recycling.

“We want to partner with the community and be good environmental stewards. This donation will enhance recycling efforts and is a step in a positive direction toward keeping the campus green,” said Tom Tucker, Interim Assistant Vice President for Facilities and Capital Projects.

Metal food cans take up space and add considerable weight to the trucks that travel to the landfill. Landfill charges are determined by the weight of the trucks.

“Very soon, FSU and Pierpont will save money at the landfill and actually will earn money by selling metal cans to the local recycling centers. Recycling will pay real dividends in the very near future,” Trisel said. “I offer a special thanks to our friends and neighbors at Novelis for making this contribution to our institutions.”
