Spanish Impact

Spanish

Being proficient in Spanish makes students marketable abroad and for the growing number of domestic fields requiring bilingual workers.

Elementary and upper-level courses prepare them for careers. Even students who minor in Spanish become fluent by the time they meet their requirements. Spanish majors are introduced to Hispanic culture and history in the United States, Latin America and Spain.

Spanish courses at Fairmont State are designed to develop students’ skills in speaking, comprehension, reading, and writing. If students study abroad, they can turn their travel to Spanish-speaking countries into class credit. Juniors are especially encouraged to study Spanish outside of the United States.

The Spanish program offers a four-year course of study leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree in either Spanish or Spanish Education. Students can also select Spanish as a minor.

Career Opportunities

In many settings, Spanish proficiency has become essential for such professions as Social Work, Criminal Justice, Business and Banking, and Allied Health Areas.

  • Social worker
  • Spanish teacher
  • National Security Agent
  • International Banking Officer

Mission Statement

In alignment with the university mission, the Spanish program helps students cultivate the intercultural competence and linguistic skills that enable them to thrive in the global economy.  Our program prepares bilingual and multicultural global citizens, who are challenged to excel academically, while undergoing a true transformation, as they explore the ways in which they will integrate Spanish with their future career paths.
