Civil Engineering Technology Impact

Civil Engineering Technology

The Civil Engineering Technology program is accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Committee (ETAC) of ABET.

Students can choose to go to work after a 2-year associate’s degree or continue through Fairmont State University’s 4 year Civil Engineering Technology Program.

Overall, the Civil Engineering Technology program curriculum is based in instruction in mathematics, science, written communication, oral communication, and economics.

Through lab and lecture, Civil Engineering Technology students in the Associate of Science Degree program focus on:

  • Fundamentals of engineering
  • Surveying
  • Civil engineering graphics
  • Construction estimating
  • Structures
  • Environmental engineering technology

Bachelor of Science degree students are introduced to more specialized classes during their 4 years study.  They include:

  • Hydraulics and hydrology
  • Soil mechanics
  • Foundation design
  • Structural analysis and design
  • Water and wastewater systems
  • Construction management

Civil Engineering Technology graduates are prepared to participate in planning, analysis, design, construction, roadway operation and maintenance of the following:

  • Airports
  • Tunnels
  • Bridges
  • Water supply and distribution systems
  • Waste collection and treatment systems

Career Opportunities

Fairmont State University Civil Engineering Technology graduates often use the program as a precursor to graduate school studies.  But, both 2 and 4-year degree students leave the university prepared for entry-level positions in engineering.

Associate degree holders can become:

  • Soil, concrete, and aggregate technicians
  • Survey crew chief assistant
  • Drafter/detailer

Bachelor of Science degree holders are qualified to be:

  • Transportation technician
  • Construction estimator or planner
  • Project engineer
