Traditional BSN

The Traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program is designed for students following high school graduation or students who desire a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.

The program is designed to prepare nurse generalists who function as a leader, manager, and advocate when providing patient-centered care in an inter-professional collaborative environment using knowledge, skills, professional values, critical thinking, and professional development. The program will prepare graduates to work in hospitals, clinics, community settings, population health and assume leadership roles. This program can be completed in 8 semesters or less depending on advanced placement (AP), dual-enrollment, or transfer courses.

Overview of the Program

  • Prepares graduates for the NCLEX-RN exam and positions as registered nurses.
  • Provides a wide range of real-world clinical experiences, such as acute care, skilled nursing, population health, community health, school-based health, and practicum.
  • Prepares graduates for graduate study.
  • Enhances critical thinking, leadership, management, and evidence-based practice skills. 
  • Provides opportunities for individual mentoring with faculty and RN preceptors

Admission Program Requirements

Students seeking admission to the Traditional BSN program must:

  1. Meet the general admission and course placement requirements of Fairmont State University. 
  2. Submit an application for Fairmont State Admission designating the Bachelor of Science in Nursing as the major field of study.
  3. Submit official college or diploma program transcripts for any coursework completed. 

Admission to the Traditional Bachelor of Science Nursing program is on a competitive basis. Students can be accepted into the Traditional BSN program in two ways. 

  • High school seniors – This applies to high school students with eight (8) or less college credits. High school students with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, ACT score of 21 or higher or SAT 1060 or higher, and TEAS composite score of 70 or higher (pending space availability) are eligible to apply to the traditional BSN program during their senior year of high school. Applications are due by January 15th (this includes official high school transcripts, official college transcripts, official ACT or SAT scores, and official TEAS scores). Progression to the sophomore year is contingent on completion of all required freshman-level courses with a grade of “C” or higher by the end of the summer semester of the year the student is scheduled to begin the sophomore-level nursing courses. Students, who are unable to begin the sophomore-level courses will need to reapply to the program. 
  • Current or previous college students – Students with nine (9) or more college credits or previous college graduates are eligible to apply. Applicants must have an overall 2.5 cumulative college GPA and a composite TEAS score of 70 or higher. Applications are due by January 15th (this includes University receipt of official high school transcripts, official college transcripts, official ACT or SAT scores, and official TEAS scores). Successful applicants will be admitted to the freshman or sophomore level, depending on the completion of freshman course requirements. Progression to the sophomore year is contingent on completion of all required freshman-level courses with a grade of “C” or higher by the end of the summer semester of the year the student is scheduled to begin the sophomore-level nursing courses. Students, who are unable to begin the sophomore-level courses will need to reapply for admission during the next application window if the deficiency is corrected. 

Students must also meet all clinical agency requirements.

Application Process

The applications will open in August for admission to the nursing program the following academic year. Application priority deadlines for all programs are: 

  • Fall Admission – January 15th 

The College of Nursing will review all qualified applicants after the priority deadline.  Students should expect to hear about their admission status 4-6 weeks following completion of the review of applicants.  Students may continue to apply after the priority admission date and will be reviewed as spots are available for admission or on the waiting list.  If a student is not admitted for the selected semester, a new nursing application must be submitted. 

Students are provisionally admitted to the program will receive an e-mail regarding required next steps, such as background checks, drug screening, immunizations, physical examination, health insurance, CPR, etc.  Students must ensure submission and approval of all required documents prior to August 1st for Fall admission.
