Weather Closing Procedure Impact

Weather Closing Procedure

Each fall and winter, Fairmont State’s campus is likely to be impacted by precipitation and freezing temperatures. The following information explains the procedures for weather delays and cancellations, and processes for keeping our roads and walkways clear in inclement weather.

The below information is provided as a guide. Please refer to the University website, social media channels and emergency alerts for updated campus details.

Delay and Closure Information

Two-Hour Delay

If Fairmont State declares a two-hour delay, class meetings scheduled before 10 a.m. will be rescheduled. All classes starting at 10 a.m. or later will operate on their normal schedule. Staff members are to report as close to their normal start time as possible.

Campus Closure

If Fairmont State has a full-day campus closure due to weather, students will be advised to check Blackboard and campus e-mail for messages and/or assignments from faculty regarding their classes. The Falcon Center will be open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The cafeteria will serve meals for the students who live on campus. The dining Hall will operate on reduced hours from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. for brunch and from 4 – 6 p.m. for dinner. The Ruth Ann Musick Library will be closed. For updates on athletic events, visit fightingfalcons.com.

Closing After 4 p.m.

If Fairmont State determines that campus activities should be cancelled after 4 p.m., students will be advised to check Blackboard and campus email for messages from faculty. The Ruth Ann Musick Library will close at 4 p.m. The Falcon Center will remain open until 8 p.m. The cafeteria will serve meals for the students who live on campus from 4 – 6 p.m. For updates on athletic events, visit fightingfalcons.com.

Additional Information

The above information is provided as a guide. Please refer to the University website, social media channels and emergency alerts for updated campus details.

The Robert C. Byrd National Aerospace Education Center in Harrison County follows the same closings/delay schedule as main campus.

Students and employees must use good judgment in deciding if they can arrive to campus safely when weather is unfavorable. Faculty are asked, within reason, to provide flexibility to commuter students who miss class due to unfavorable weather.

In compliance with state code, employees who do not report to work or who report to work later than their normal start time, will be required to use annual leave or make arrangements with their supervisor to make up the lost time unless there is a declared state of emergency.

Some personnel necessary to the operation of the institution, including Facilities Department employees, are considered essential employees, and are required to report to work and/or make every effort to report to work.

Information on weather delays and closings will be communicated through our Emergency Alert system. All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to update their weather alert contact information each year.

Snow Removal/Ice Control Program

Snow Removal/Ice Control Map

The purpose of the snow removal program is to treat all paths in an order that will benefit the most people within the quickest timeframe. The program also helps provide the safest route into all buildings on campus. *The attached map details the main campus snow removal program.

The Facilities Department has divided the main campus into three divisions based on priority. ADA accessible entrances, main walkways and roadways are top priority. The remaining inner campus and other walkways are secondary. Any remaining pathways will be tertiary priority.

At minimum, all primary roads and walkways will be treated before 8 a.m., and secondary and tertiary walkways and paths will follow. While crews work diligently to maintain safe winter conditions, sometimes the magnitude or severity of the storm could impair walking surfaces. Proper footwear is strongly advised during the winter months. Please adhere to cleared walkways and use high caution if walking along untreated walkways or paths.

When necessary, during inclement weather conditions, the upper gate leading to Hillcrest Rd. may be closed. “No Thru Traffic” signs will be placed at campus entrances alerting drivers the Hillcrest Rd. gate is closed. This is also true if the top deck of the parking garage is unsafe and must be closed.

All associated slips, trips or falls must be reported within 24 Hours of occurrence to your immediate supervisor, and Human Resources or Assistant Director of Occupational Safety. To report a concerning area or for more information, call Facilities at (304) 367-4110.
