Three Music Camps for Youth Offered

Fairmont State's Community Music Program will sponsor three camps for student musicians this summer Piano Camp, "Born to Entertain" and Brass Camp.

Piano Camp

The 11th Annual Piano Camp will be held June 13-17 in Wallman Hall. The camp is open to piano students ages 8 through high school who have completed at least one year of piano study offered by the CMP. The Explorer Class is open to students ages 6-8 years of age, who have no piano experience.

Piano Camp will meet daily from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with the Explorer Class meeting from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Registration fees are $78 for Piano Camp, $48 for Explorer Class. Materials for the Explorer Class are $8. Individual lessons are available at $18 per 30-minute session. Those interested in the camp should register as soon as possible, as space is limited.

Director Nancy Bird will be aided by Assistant Director Natalie Camele Buckley. Previous camp activities include playing with a conductor; multi-piano ensembles; expanded computer learning for musicianship, fundamentals and history; guest artists and piano recitals; and many other events.

"Born to Entertain"

"Born to Entertain," a class for students ages 5-12, will be held from June 17 to July 28. This is a class for exploration and discovery for young singers and actors who wish to consider further studies and experiences with the stage.

"Although many students study privately, the show choir (a part of this class) adds a dimension that strengthens the private study with the addition of meeting others with similar interests, and the discipline required for following stage directions and the director," said Anne Schooley, Director of the Community Music Program and teacher of this class.

Singer Stephanie Adlington will assist Schooley for this course. Registration for the 10 classes is $125.

The showcase performance for this summer will be "Nothin' But The Blues." It will be held at 7 p.m. July 28 in the Turley Center Ballroom. Students who wish to participate in the class do not have to be present for every class and rehearsal; summer vacation schedules are taken into consideration.

Brass Camp

The final camp planned for June 19-24 is the Brass Camp, hosted and taught by members of the Appalachian Brass Quintet, resident artists in the FSU Music Department. This is the only residential camp. Registration is $200, which includes lodging and dining. A separate $100 registration is available for those who wish to commute from home daily.

The camp is open to high school brass performers. Students will perform in ensembles of trumpets, horns, trombones and baritones/tubas, in brass quintets and in a large brass choir each day. Each ensemble will be coached by a member of the Appalachian Brass Quintet.

Students will attend sessions in music theory and jazz improvisation on a daily basis and will be exposed to a variety of musical styles from the 17th century classical selections to present-day jazz and pop selections. Each day a different professional guest artist will present clinics in his or her particular area of specialization. The Ohio University Brass Quintet will be guest performers, and there will be a faculty recital during the camp week.
