Sandy Shriver Named Classified Employee of the Year

Sandy Shriver, Program Assistant II for the FSU College of Science & Technology, has been named Classified Employee of the Year for Fairmont State.

Shriver was honored with the award during the annual Classified Staff Luncheon on Tuesday, Nov. 2., in the Turley Center Ballroom.

"This award is a great honor," Shriver said. "It was an honor just to be nominated, but to be selected, especially by a group of my peers, means so much to me. All of the other nominees have done wonderful things for Fairmont State. I thank God for all the blessings I've had during my years at Fairmont State."

Other nominees for the award were Dalene Horner, Eugene Morris, Debby Rogers and Annette Schorr, Administrative Associate for the Robert C. Byrd National Aerospace Education Center.

"When I came here four years ago, there were many Fairmont State traditions I thought were very wonderful, and this is one of them," said FSU President Daniel J. Bradley. "We get together once a year to thank all the classified staff for their work and point out five employees that their supervisors and their peers feel have done an extraordinary job."

FSC&TC President Blair Montgomery also recognized the classified staff for their efforts.

"The classified staff are the unsung heroes, the hidden jewel of the entire institution," Montgomery said. "They are a critical element of the institution. Without them, we could not be the institution we are today. Each of the five nominees has been outstanding during their time of service to Fairmont State."

Shriver was born and raised in Fairmont. She earned an associate degree in accounting from Webster College in 1991 and is currently enrolled in the Regents Bachelor of Arts Degree Program at FS.

Before coming to Fairmont State to work in 1994, Shriver worked at West Virginia University for three years in the Department of Developmental Disabilities and the Department of Community Medicine. When she came to work at FS for the Department of Science & Math, the department's bookkeeping was still being done by pencil and ledger book. She helped create computerized forms and accounting records. She has worked as an administrative secretary, administrative secretary " senior, purchasing assistant and program assistant for the School of Science & Technology. Her other campus activities include the following: FS representative to the State Advisory Council of Classified Employees since 2001, member of the FS Classified Staff Council since 2000, a staff volunteer for the FS Capital Campaign, a FS staff representative for Higher Education Day at the Legislature in 2002 and 2003, a FS staff member on the Criterion One Self-Study Committee for Institutional Accreditation from 2001-2003.

Shriver has also served as a deaconess of the Baptist Temple Church in Fairmont since 2003, a group leader of the American Baptist Girls Group at the Baptist Temple since 1999 and team captain and a member of several Relay for Life teams. She and her husband Danny have been married for 12 years.

"I like the close knit campus community," Shriver said. "I enjoy working with the students and helping them in their pursuit of an education. I have met many genuinely good staff, faculty and students at Fairmont State and am fortunate to have worked with them over the last 10 years."

Shriver's award also included the following gifts: a family portrait from John Piscitelli; reserved parking and reserved tickets for FS basketball games from the Athletics Office; a week of free lunches at the Nickel from Aladdin Food Service; a year of free campus parking from the Business Office; an FS shirt and hat from Dale Bradley; a book bag, coffee cup, note pads and mouse pad from the FSC&TC President's Office; Masquers season tickets and orchestra tickets from the School of Fine Arts; an FS shirt from the Alumni Office; a $25 gift certificate from the campus bookstore; a free fitness assessment and three personal training sessions from the Wellness Center; a T-shirt and coffee mug from the School of Education; a bookstore gift certificate from the Robert C. Byrd National Aerospace Education Center; a desk name plate from the Physical Plant; a plaque from the Human Resources Office; a color copy and a mouse pad from the Xerox Document Center; personalized notepads from Tammy Holden; and $500 from the Office of Institutional Advancement. Also, Student Government provided flowers for all the nominees.

Also during the luncheon, the Office of Human Resources honored employees for their years of service to Fairmont State. Honored for five years of service were Deborah Barker, Cinda Ewing, Karen Grubb, Deborah Hawkins, Vickie Hedrick, Tami Hines, Yvonne Lepock and William Thomaschek Jr. Honored for 10 years of service were Kelli Baker, Orval Barnhart, David Glasscock, Dalene Horner, Betty Lombardo, Donna Thomaschek and Patricia Whiting. Honored for 15 years of service were Joni Bokanovich, Maria Marshall, Sandy Shriver and Sherrie Strawderman. Honored for 20 years of service were Mary Margaret Fletcher and Mary Frances Hawkins. Honored for 25 years of service were J. Brian Richards and David Young. Honored for 30 years of service were Harriet Bowyer, Janet Dudash and Ann Lester. Honored for 40 years of service was Ruth Smedley.
