Harvey Named Dean of Graduate Studies

Jun 06, 2005

Fairmont State University has announced that Dr. Richard Harvey has been named Dean of Graduate Studies.

"Our graduate program offerings and enrollment have grown a great deal since the creation of the graduate school two years ago, and I am confident that Rick's leadership will continue that growth," said Dr. Daniel J. Bradley, FSU President.

Enrollment in the graduate school has increased to about 350 students. FSU offers two graduate degree programs in education: a Master of Education (M.Ed.) and a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.). In collaboration with Marshall University, FSU offers a Master of Science degree in Nursing with an emphasis in nursing education. Also in collaboration with MU, FSU offers a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice.

"I'm excited about this opportunity to manage the graduate programs at FSU," Harvey said. "I believe FSU is uniquely positioned to provide access to quality graduate programs and opportunities for continued professional and personal development. I hope to rely on my entrepreneurial background to develop new and innovative graduate programs."

Harvey joined the faculty of Fairmont State in 1988. He is a full professor of Finance and Business Law. He previously served as the Coordinator of the Finance and Business Law department within the FSU School of Business where he designed curriculum, received multiple online course development grants, founded a student finance organization that operates as an investment club and chaired or served on numerous committees including Faculty Senate, Liberal Studies and Strategic Planning.

Prior to joining the faculty, Harvey served as the Director of the Fairmont State Small Business Development Center. He regularly provides seminars on topics such as financial management, estate planning and commercial law. He often serves as an expert witness in cases involving investments and broker misrepresentation.

Harvey also practices elder law providing estate planning, wills, trusts and Medicaid planning assistance. He maintains membership in the American Bar Association, West Virginia State Bar and the National Association of Elder Law Attorneys.

His educational background includes a juris doctorate from West Virginia University where he received the Excellence for the Future Award, a Master of Business Administration degree with a specialization in Finance from WVU and two bachelor degrees from WVU.

Harvey resides in Morgantown with his wife, Beth Ann, an accountant, and daughter Cearah. His daughter Rachel lives in Baltimore and works as a research assistant for Johns Hopkins University.
