Fundraiser to Support Students' Study in Italy

Sep 02, 2011

The Calabria-West Virginia Italian Heritage Association will sponsor a fundraiser this weekend to support students wishing to study at the University of Calabria in Italy.

The event, which will be held in conjunction with the annual West Virginia Italian Heritage Festival, will recognize the contribution to life in the state and beyond by a successful Italian-American, and encourage further exchange of students between Calabria and Fairmont.

The Association’s dinner to honor Lewis D’Antoni, West Virginia native and author of “The Coach’s Coach,”will be held Saturday, Sept. 3, at Village Square Conference Center in Clarksburg.  The event will start at 5 p.m. with a social hour, followed by dinner and the ceremony honoring D’Antoni at 6 p.m.

The event is open to the public, and tickets can be purchased by contacting the Greater Clarksburg Convention and Visitors Bureau at (304) 622-2157. A portion of each $35 ticket will go toward the scholarship fund for qualified Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College students.

Those who wish to make a contribution to the scholarship fund may do so by writing a check to the Calabria-West Virginia Italian Heritage Association with the notation on the memo line: “For study in Calabria.”  Contributions should be mailed to CWVIHA, P.O. Box 4211, Clarksburg, WV 26302.

The mission of the Calabria-West Virginia Italian Heritage Association is to preserve and perpetuate Italian culture and heritage as reflected by the Italian descendants in West Virginia. In affiliation with the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center and its academic programming, the Association focuses on educating and developing interest in Italian arts, language, literature, history and folklore. The Association encourages study abroad programs throughout Italy, such as Fairmont State University’s exchange program with the University of Calabria.
