Fairmont State donates a record $31,525 through United Way campaign

Dec 03, 2018

Fairmont State University has raised a record $31,525 through the annual United Way Campaign, which wrapped up Nov. 9. This amount is the largest campaign in Fairmont State’s 39-year campaign history.

“United Way is working to build a stronger community through quality education, stable income, and better health for everyone,” said President Dr. Mirta Martin. “I’m so thankful to every individual, department and student that helped make our campaign a tremendous success.”

Since 2008, the University has given the United Way of Marion County nearly $300,000.

Various administrators, staff members and students celebrated the campaign’s achievements Dec. 3 at the Falcon Center. A check was presented to the United Way of Marion County during the event and recognized the campaign theme this year again, “Be the One.”

Fairmont State students helped raise more than $3,600 for the campaign through the first ever Maroon MadnessT-shirt sale. Over 700 limited edition t-shirts were sold for the football game against Glenville State.

“When I agreed to coordinate this year’s campaign, it was suggested that we set a lofty goal of $25,000. This was something we felt would be difficult, but achievable and knew that we would need a streamlined approach and a lot of help in order to make it happen. Through the help of a great planning committee, a hard-working team of captains for their specific units, and the buy-in of our students, we are excited to say that we not only reached out goal, but surpassed it,” said Patrick Snively, Head Swimming Coach and United Way Campaign Coordinator.

“I think this concerted effort and the amount of money raised for the United Way shows that our campus community is committed to our surrounding community. This money will do a lot of good for individuals in our community that need it most and I am extremely proud of this campaign,” added Snively.

Through the help of 35 volunteer team captains, Fairmont State had a record outreach program and number of fundraisers throughout campus. More than 107 University employees donated to the United Way campaign.

“Fairmont State University’s commitment to our community is unwavering,” said Tina Shaw, United Way Community Campaign Chair. “This campaign’s record-breaking year is a testament to the generosity of the faculty, staff and students.”

All contributions for Fairmont State’s United Way campaign stay local, as the money raised helps support 29 unique programs at 22 health and human service agencies. The staff and volunteers of those agencies work tirelessly to address issues associated with lower incomes, illness, illiteracy, domestic violence, homelessness and affordable childcare in Marion County. The agencies, however, do not have the resources to carry out elaborate fundraising campaigns of their own and rely heavily on additional funding.

The entire campaign’s goal in Marion County is $475,000. Fairmont State’s campus goal was $25,000.

Fairmont State is one of the largest contributor to the United Way of Marion County.

“At Fairmont State University, we understand the importance of living united,” added Martin. “This campaign’s success exemplifies that.”
