FSC&TC Faculty Members Honored

Three Fairmont State Community & Technical College faculty members were honored at the recent Academic Awards Banquet.

All of these awards are made possible through gifts made in support of faculty development to the Fairmont State Foundation, Inc.

Leslie Lovett, Associate Professor of Medical Laboratory Technology, has been named the recipient of the fourth annual Paul E. Edwards Award for Teaching Excellence. The faculty recipient for this award is nominated by his or her peers and students. Nominees are evaluated by the Faculty Development Committee.

Lovett has been a full-time faculty member at Fairmont State for 15 years. During that time, she has taught, advised and counseled numerous students who have benefited from her expertise, professionalism and accessibility. The following is a quote from Lovett's philosophy of teaching: "I love learning be it through continuing education, visiting other programs, or just chatting with students and other educators. If I can have an impact in just one life, see progress and fulfillment, and help them down the road to finding themselves I am content and happy."

Brian Floyd, Instructor of Food Service Management, received the Harold & Roselyn Williamson Straight Award.

Recruitment in the Culinary Arts program has quadrupled over past the three years. One of seven certified executive chefs in the state, Floyd encourages students to look beyond themselves for opportunities by offering practicum experiences nationwide. He is also active in the community. Floyd was a team mentor for two local ProStart teams and took them to compete on a national level. In fact, United Technical Center's ProStart team was featured nationally on the Food Channel Network. He has incorporated community service into his lab curriculum; each class does a meal for the Union Mission in the fall and spring semesters.

Floyd is also a leader on campus. He was responsible for two national accreditations for the Culinary Arts Program -- the National Restaurant's ProManagement Certification and the American Culinary Federation Accreditation. He also helped develop a bachelor's degree in hospitality management with the School of Business and an Associate of Applied Science degree in pastry and baking arts.

Carla Witt Ford was presented with the Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Teaching Award. She has served as an adjunct instructor for photography in the Graphics Technology Department for many years.

"Over the years, we have experienced nothing but positive feedback and a high level of student enthusiasm from her classes," said Kari Carlson Coffindaffer, Program Coordinator for Graphics Technology. "She brings to her classes a core of expertise and a high level of industrial experience in her field, which helps make the classes extremely comprehensive and helps the students stay abreast with the latest industrial trends."
