Oct 20, 2005

A Fairmont State swimmer is one of six across the nation to earn CollegeSwimming.com National Collegiate Swimmer-of-the-Week (NCSW) honors for performances Oct. 13-16. According to an article on www.collegeswimming.com, the six were selected by a panel of collegiate coaches and nominated by coaches, sports information directors, conference representatives and CollegeSwimming.com staffers.

The National Collegiate Swimmer-of-the-Week Awards are underwritten by Counsilman-Hunsaker & Associates, a multi-service engineering, planning, and design firm that specializes in aquatic facilities.

Matej Tomas, a Fairmont State University student from Zagreb, Croatia, paced the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons to a 133-48 victory over Wheeling Jesuit University by winning the 200 Free (1:44.24) and breaking a pool record in the 100 Back in (51.79, NCAA-B). Tomas also led off a victorious 200 medley relay (24.53). Then on Saturday at the West Virginia Relays, Tomas' four swims helped his team finish second to WVU 68-50. In the 200 Medley Relay, Tomas led them off to victory (1:40.06, 24.59). In a different way, Tomas swam the butterfly leg on the winning 400 Medley Relay (3:37.92, 49.94). Tomas led off second-place 400 Free (47.55) and 300 Fly Relays (51.17, NCAA-B).
