Forensic & Debate Teams Compete on State Level

The Fairmont State Forensic and Debate Teams competed at the West Virginia Intercollegiate Forensic League Tournament held at Marshall University on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 18 and 19.

Steve McElroy, a speech and theatre major from Fairmont, placed first in Prose Interpretation and third in Poetry Interpretation. Chris Sharps, a graduate of Sherman High School in Boone County, placed sixth in Prose Interpretaion. Sharps and Lauren Zirk, an oral communication major from Hedgesville, placed third in Dramatic Duo Interpretation. Amy Napierkowski, a freshman from Sutton, placed sixth in Dramatic Interpretation. Jon Fox, a graduate of East Fairmont High School, place fifth in Informative Speaking. Fox was also a semi-finalist in Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

The debate team finished 3rd overall in the tournament. Members of the team include Chris Sharps, Jon Fox, Ashley Stevens, Sarah Grumblatt, Jennifer Cogar, Brett Harper and Lauren Zirk.

The Fairmont State teams are coached by Dr. Bob Mild (public speaking), Kim Korcsmaros (debate) and Dr. Francene Kirk (oral interpretation.
