Department of Biology, Chemistry and Geoscience Hosts Open House

Nov 01, 2004

More than 170 area high school students took part in an Open House for Department of Biology, Chemistry and Geoscience of the Fairmont State University College of Science & Technology on Friday, Oct. 29.

Participating high schools included Fairmont Senior High School, East Fairmont High School, Hundred High School and Clay Battelle High School. The event took place from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Hunt Haught Hall and the Ruth Ann Musick Library on the main Fairmont State campus.

"Students interested in biology, chemistry, forensic science, science education, medical school, dental school, pharmacy school, physical therapy school or other pre-professional fields had a good opportunity to learn what Fairmont State University has to offer in these areas," said Harry Baxter, Professor of Chemistry and organizer of the event.

"The Open House experience should help prospective students feel more comfortable about choosing to attend Fairmont State after finishing high school."

Activities included a tour of the facilities and a demonstration of some of the department's scientific instruments. In addition, there were demonstrations by several Fairmont State biology and chemistry students. High school students had an opportunity to talk with professors and students in the programs offered by Fairmont State.
