Kestrel Issue 44 Launched
Kestrel: A Journal of Literature and Art and the Fairmont State University Department of Humanities is pleased to announce the publication of Kestrel 44, the Winter 2020-2021 issue.
“Kestrel is such a gem,” said Mirta M. Martin, Fairmont State University President. “Especially during the past year. Now, more than ever, we need stories that lift our hearts, challenge our minds, and inspire our spirit. The collection in Kestrel 44 does just that, providing images, in pictures and words, that remind of us of the challenges and hope of our shared human experience.”
Kestrel 44 features visual art by Kaitlyn Hunter and poetry and prose by returning contributors Cathy Barber, John Blair, Ace Boggess, Jim Daniels, K. Uwe Dunn, Cynthia Hogue, and Ray Keifetz, and first-time contributors Michael Garcia Bertrand, Kevin Boyle, Jonathan Bracker, Marisa P. Clark, Noah Davis, Ruth Dickey, Amanda Hartzell, Max Heinegg, Julia Kastner, Paul Kopp, Susan Manchin, Hannah Marshall, John Moessner, Tina Morris, Marlene Olin, Derek N. Otsuji, Christine Potter, Bonnie Proudfoot, Andrew Michael Roberts, Gabriel Sage, Anna Egan Smucker, Jason Tandon, George Thomas, Matthew Tuckner, and Sara Moore Wagner. Reviews in the issue are by Rick Campbell, Hayley Harvey, and William Heath.
“This issue of Kestrel doesn’t have as many pandemic-related pieces as we anticipated, but Kaitlyn Hunter’s photographs ask us ‘to navigate a turbulent world in isolation’,” said Donna Long, Editor-in-Chief. “The work in Kestrel 44 provides opportunities to reflect on this past difficult year and to practice the empathy that literature and art encourages.”
Since 1993, Kestrel has published writers and artists from around the world, and since 2008 has celebrated each biannual issue by bringing contributors to Fairmont State’s campus for a weekend of literary events. Because of the ongoing pandemic, Kestrel held a virtual Celebration for issues 42 and 43 in December 2020 featuring twelve contributors. A virtual Celebration for the current issue will be held later this year.
