CMP Piano Students Win Top Honors

Mar 04, 2005

Students of Nancy Bird, Fairmont State Community Music Program Artist Teacher of Piano, recently participated in the West Virginia Music Educators Solo and Ensemble Festival, held at Fairmont State. Students participating in the festival are awarded fair, good, excellent or superior ratings by the judges.

Receiving superior ratings of 1 for piano performance at the elementary sixth-grade level was Emily DeVault, daughter of Jarrod and Wendy DeVault of Fairmont. DeVault has been a student with the Community Music Program for the past two years.

Bridget Horner, daughter of Wilbur and Dalene Horner of Mannington, received a superior rating of 1 for the category of junior high school, ages 11-14, for piano performance. Horner has received six years of piano training with the CMP.

Both girls received a recommendation to audition for the WVMEA recital and master class at the state convention on March 10-12.

Bird has been Artist Teacher with the Community Music Program for the past 15 years. In addition to being Artist Teacher of Piano, Bird is the Founder and Director of Fairmont State's Summer Piano Camp. She has held offices with the WVMTA Association, is the founder of the Piano Alliance with the Fairmont State CMP and is a former member of the Piano Community Music Faculty at the University of Charleston.
