Fairmont State University Celebrates Earth Day

Throughout the month of April, Fairmont State University students, faculty and staff celebrated Earth Day through various programming that was focused on creating environmental awareness and promoting sustainability. Many of those efforts are also present on the University’s campus year-round, but Professor of Chemistry Dr. Erica Harvey says April 22 often serves as a reminder of our shared commitment and obligation to our planet.

Fairmont State Outdoor Recreation teamed up with the Fairmont State Tennis Team and Explorer’s Club for a campus clean-up event on Friday, October 16, where the volunteers collected a record breaking 762.8 pounds of debris and litter, earning 25 volunteer hours collectively. 

Fairmont State receives grant to provide support to student veterans

Fairmont State University has been awarded $2,478 through the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission’s Diversity for Equity grant program to assist the University’s Veteran Services Office in starting a new engagement activity for students who have served in the military. Fairmont State will use the funds to provide outdoor recreation events for student veterans.

Outdoor recreation students donate more than $1,000 in volunteer work

It’s been said that a rising tide lifts all boats. For Fairmont State University’s Outdoor Recreation program, they know that they succeed by giving back and making a difference. Throughout the month of February, these students made an economic impact of more than $1,000 for work done at Coopers Rock State Forest and the Fairmont Soup Opera.

First-generation students began their college experience in the great outdoors last month as part of the Discover Fairmont State program.

Eight students toured the New River Gorge with two faculty members from Fairmont State University and two current students to gain a support system and also learn what to expect from their first year at FSU.
