About 400 students will participate in the 146th Commencement for Fairmont State University at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 16, in the Feaster Center.

Fairmont State alumna Donna Hopkins will be the Commencement speaker. Bryan Foley of Pipestem will be the student speaker representing the Class of 2015.

Fairmont State University students in the College of Science and Technology presented their research during the 90th Annual Meeting of the West Virginia Academy of Science was held at West Liberty University on April 11.

The following faculty mentors worked with students on research projects: Mark Flood, Donald Trisel, Steven Roof, Erica Harvey, Matthew Scanlon, Andreas Baur, Albert Magro, Phillip Yeager, Tony Morris and James Weekley.

The Contractors Association of West Virginia (CAWV) Scholarship Foundation distributed $16,000 this year to West Virginia college students pursuing an education and career in construction or engineering. Recipients were selected on the basis of their academic performance, extracurricular activities, work experience, financial need and interest in a construction industry career.

Fairmont State University’s College of Science and Technology hosted the Dominion West Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair on March 28. Sixty-five high school students from 19 schools in West Virginia participated in the day focused on celebrating student research in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

STEM Enterprise has made a $10,000 contribution through the Fairmont State Foundation, Inc. in support of the West Virginia FIRST^® LEGO^® League (FLL) robotics program for the 2015-2016 season. The NASA IV&V Educator Resource Center coordinates the statewide tournament that has is hosted in Fairmont by Fairmont State University’s College of Science and Technology each year.

Fairmont State University’s American Society of Civil Engineers Student Chapter continues its tradition of excellence and for the 12th consecutive year will represent the region at the National Concrete Canoe Competition.

Fairmont State University Math Department faculty members, along with FSU pre-service mathematics teachers, attended the West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics Annual Conference on March 13 and 14 at the Stonewall Jackson Resort.

The two-day conference focuses on learning from other mathematics teachers in West Virginia about ways to improve mathematics instruction.

The 2015 Dominion West Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair (WVSSEF) will be held on Saturday, March 28, at Fairmont State University.

Team “Alpha Falcons” representing Fairmont State University was awarded third place in the second annual Mylan Hackathon, which took place Saturday, Feb. 28, and Sunday, March 1.

Two Fairmont State University seniors were selected to participate in the 12th annual Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol on Wednesday, March 4. More than 100 students from across the state shared original research projects highlighting the importance of West Virginia higher education to the state Legislature.
