English Honor Society Welcomes Nine New Students

Sep 22, 2015

Nine Fairmont State University students were inducted into the Beta Omega chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the National English Honor Society. The ceremony took place on Sunday, Sept. 13, at the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center.

The following students were inducted: Christopher A. Dowell, Vicki R. Elam, Bethany P. Gorman, Ruth A. Lamp, Elizabeth W. Parker. Daniel J. Reitz, Brittany C. Rimmer, Angela R. Spatafore and Christopher J. Vance.

Dowell, whose hometown is Charleston, is an English major with a minor in psychology. Elam, from Clarksburg, and Rimmer, from Berkeley, are both Education majors with a concentration in English 5-Adult. Gorman of Bridgeport and Reitz of Mannington are also English majors with business and technical writing minors. Reitz is also majoring in Spanish. Lamp, from Morgantown, is an English major and has a minor in history, and Parker, a Weston native, is majoring in English. Spatafore, from Fairmont, is an English major and an information systems management minor. Vance, from Belington, is an English major and Spanish minor. This academic year’s inductees are all seniors.

Students who are considered for this honor must meet specific requirements. Each student must be nominated by an English faculty member, then perform at scrupulously high standards of excellence. A satisfactory GPA, professional behavior and steady progress toward a degree must be maintained.

“Membership in Sigma Tau Delta can open many professional doors, both inside and outside of the academy. We are lucky to have students talented enough to qualify,” said Dr. James Matthews, faculty sponsor of the Beta Omega chapter.

Sigma Tau Delta was established in 1924 to confer distinction for high achievement in the English language, literature and writing and to foster literacy and other aspects of the discipline of English. The Beta Omega chapter was organized in 1956 at Fairmont State.
