Apr 14, 2014

Now that warmer weather has arrived, a presentation at Fairmont State University will offer tips on how to “Handle the Heat and Take Care of Your Feet.”

Dr. Jessica Brown, Assistant Professor of Exercise Science, and Jan Kiger, a new faculty member in the School of Education, Health and Human Performance and Program Director of the Outdoor Recreation Leadership minor, will share their knowledge from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, in Room 320 of the Education Building. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information or to RSVP, contact Brown at (304) 333-3649  or jbrown56@fairmontstate.edu.

“While it is important to get out and exercise this summer; high temps, humidity and exercise can be a dangerous combination. I will review important physiological responses of the body when exercising in the heat and what you can do to maximize performance and minimize your chances of becoming susceptible to heat illness,” Brown said.

Kiger will follow up with a discussion of the appropriate attire to wear while exercising in the heat and how to take care of your feet while exercising.

“Whether you’ve never experienced any foot-related problems or you’ve got the most difficult feet in the world to fit, chances are you can improve your fit as well as your foot health and performance,” Kiger said.

Brown earned her Ph.D. in Physical Education with a Specialization in Exercise Physiology from Springfield College in Massachusetts. She also received an M.S. in Exercise Physiology from Springfield College and a B.S. in Physical Education with specializations in Exercise Physiology and Applied Health and Fitness from Plymouth State University in New Hampshire. At Fairmont State, Brown teaches undergraduate courses including Clinical Applications of Exercise Physiology, Research Methodology and Research Design, as well as graduate courses including Laboratory Techniques and Graduate Seminar. Her research experience has been in the areas of sports performance and performance in the heat.
