Author George Prochnik to Speak on Campus Feb. 18

Feb 17, 2014

The Fairmont State University Common Book Committee announced in the fall of 2013 that the Common Book title for the 2013-2014 academic year is George Prochnik’s “In Pursuit of Silence: Listening for Meaning in a World of Noise.”

Prochnik will speak about his book at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18, in Colebank Hall. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

“In Pursuit of Silence” examines why people began to be so loud as a society and what it is that gets lost when people can no longer find quiet. Copies of the book are available for purchase in the Bound for Success Bookstore in the Falcon Center and for loan from the Ruth Ann Musick Library.

A writer and journalist, Prochnik is also the author of “Putnam Camp & The Purpose of American Psychology,” a New York Times Editor’s Choice book. He just completed a biography of Stefan Zweig, “The Impossible Exile,” to be published by Other Press in May 2014. His work has been published in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Playboy and Cabinet magazine.
