A team of Fairmont State University students traveled to Washington, D.C., earlier this month to present their research on economic sustainability in Helvetia, W.Va., through heritage tourism as part of the 2011 ARC Appalachian Teaching Project.
A reception to honor seven international students graduating from Fairmont State University is planned for noon to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16. The Office of International Student Services will host the event in collaboration with the International Education Committee.
Deciding to participate in Fairmont State University's Italian Exchange Program (UNICAL) was far easier than actually making the first-time trip 5,000 miles from home in Marion County, WV. Lindsay Menas, an English major, will spend one year studying at the University of Calabria-Consenza. Through e-mails, blogs and Skype communication, she describes many of her opportunities as first-time-in-her-life experiences. Just getting to the second largest campus in Europe, with an enrollment of 40,000 students, was a unique journey for the University junior.

Planned for the week of Nov. 14, International Education Week is organized by the Office of International Student Services and is co-sponsored by the International Education Committee, Office of Residence Life and International Student Organization.
A Grand Opening Celebration is planned for the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center on the campus of Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College. As part of a week of events planned for Homecoming 2011, the Grand Opening Celebration will take place at 3 p.m. at the Folklife Center, which is located near the Squibb Wilson Boulevard entrance to the main campus.
A few years ago, Anup Poudel could not have imagined his higher education journey from Nepal to the United States. Born in Kathmandu, a city of nearly a million people, his familiar surroundings included structures obstructing the views and streets filled with cars. The rolling hills and winding roads of West Virginia were very unfamiliar on his drive from a local airport to his future home, the Fairmont State University campus.
The Calabria-West Virginia Italian Heritage Association will sponsor a fundraiser this weekend to support students wishing to study at the University of Calabria in Italy.
The event, which will be held in conjunction with the annual West Virginia Italian Heritage Festival, will recognize the contribution to life in the state and beyond by a successful Italian-American, and encourage further exchange of students between Calabria and Fairmont.
The Office of International Student Services will host a Welcome Reception for International Students at the shared main campus of Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, in the Falcon Center third floor conference rooms.
On a warm day in early June, Fairmont State senior, Alicia Nieman and I meet at a local lunch spot. To most people we may look like colleagues or friends who are taking some time to reconnect. In actuality I am stealing a few moments of her time to witness her crossroad moment and to share it with you.

Fairmont State was one of only two schools in the state to receive funding in 2010 from the West Virginia Research Trust Fund’s STEM Grant Program for State Colleges and Universities, also known as "Bucks for Brains".
