STaR SURE Grant Impact

STaR SURE Grant

Fairmont State University was awarded the STaR SURE Grant to help students gain experience in hands-on long-term undergraduate research starting Spring 2024!

We are accepting 11 students annually to conduct research in STEM areas (science, technology, engineering, and math) during their Spring and Fall semesters.  Students will earn a stipend of $2,000, join our STEM community, and present their research at scientific meetings. This experience is targeting Freshman, Sophomores, and Juniors. Graduating seniors may apply and be accepted under special circumstances.

Program Description

STaR Division LogoProviding substantive research experiences in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields to undergraduate students is a crucial step in preparing the next generation of STEM researchers and faculty. Undergraduates attending West Virginia colleges and universities have limited opportunities to engage in STEM research, and this lack of opportunity results in fewer students pursuing graduate study and careers in STEM fields. To address this lack of opportunity, West Virginia Science, Technology and Research (STaR) created the Summer/Semester Undergraduate Research Experience Program (SURE) to help colleges and universities in West Virginia provide research experiences to undergraduates in STEM fields. Eligible undergraduates should be substantially involved in on-going research programs at the home institution, other institutions of higher education, or private and federal research organizations.

This funding opportunity is sponsored by the WV STaR division and the WV Higher Education Policy Commission

Requirements of Awarded Students

  • Conduct meaningful undergraduate research with their research mentor.
