Elementary Education Impact

Elementary Education

Elementary school teachers play an important role in the education and development of children, creating a foundation for future school success and life opportunities!

The Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education program at Fairmont State University provides opportunities for candidates seeking certification in K-6 multi-subject classrooms, with additional teaching specializations available, at the initial and advanced levels through both undergraduate and graduate programs. Candidates who wish to teach in grades kindergarten through sixth grade in an open or self-contained classroom are prepared to meet West Virginia certification requirements and the curriculum requirements of Fairmont State University by completing the Elementary Education Course of Study. In addition to Professional Studies, Content Methods, and General Studies coursework required for this major, candidates are also required to complete field experiences and student teaching in an approved K-6 classroom.

Employment Opportunities

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of kindergarten and elementary school teachers is expected to grow by 6 percent from 2014 to 2024, about as fast as the average for all occupations. This growth is expected because of increases in enrollment in public schools and anticipated retirement trends. (Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2014-2015 Edition, Kindergarten and Elementary School Teachers, (December 17, 2015).)
