Student athlete strives to be first on and off the field

Daniel Monroe III moved from Miami, Florida to the Mountain State just prior to football camp for the FSU Falcons 2011 season. “I’m just trying to do what I can to be that first person in my immediate family to get to the NFL. My uncle tried and didn’t quite make it. My dad tried and didn’t quite make it. They always say I’m the last hope. However my dad always, aside from that, told me that this is all due to academics. You can’t get anywhere in life without taking care of your books first,” Monroe says.

The red shirt freshman and academic junior is committed to showing the same drive and determination in class as he does on the field. Prior to transferring to FSU as a football running back and student, Monroe made the dean’s list at Florida State University.  “Here I am striving to make the President’s List every semester,” he explains. In his first night on the field as a starter for the Fighting Falcons, Monroe had 161 yards on 18 carries and scored 2 touchdowns.  But, there will be more to come as Monroe plans to earn an undergraduate degree in accounting and finance at Fairmont State University.
