GEAR UP High School Quiz Bowl Planned for Oct. 17

Fairmont State University's GEAR UP Partnership will host the annual High School Quiz Bowl Competition on Saturday, Oct. 17.

The event begins at 8 a.m. and will take place in the Falcon Center third floor conference rooms. An awards ceremony will be held at the conclusion of the competition.

The Honors program and Kappa Delta Pi will host the event. Participants will include 24 sophomores and juniors from four high schools: Calhoun Middle/High, Liberty High, Lincoln High and University High.

Quiz Bowl, which is an academic competition for area GEAR UP high schools, was begun to foster the idea that learning can be fun and rewarding. By participating in the event, students have the opportunity to make lasting friendships, as well as put to use facts and skills they have learned.

The competition consists of four categories: social studies, math/science, English and pop culture. Students compete in each of the categories, and the team in the end with the most points wins. The winners receive a plaque and bragging rights. All participants receive a gift bag with a T-shirt, consolation prize and certificate of participation.
