Our Fall class session has ended.   We will be starting a new session in March 2010.

FALL 2009

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS 

Technology and Class Assistant Training for LLL

Instructor:  Edge/Dawson                             -                          

 Tuesday, 10 a.m. - Noon, September 1, 2009

Description: The Technology and Class Assistant Committees encourage you to attend this hands-on course which is open to all members who are interested in learning the operational procedures for the classroom technology equipment. Each participant is encouraged to volunteer to be the Tech Assistant and Class Assistant for one or more courses.  Assistants play an important role in the smooth functioning of the class. New ideas are welcome.  We must have a Class Assistant and Tech Assistant for each session.

Museum Masterpieces: The Louvre                        4 sessions         

Non-member fee $25

Fridays, 10 a.m. - Noon, September 18, 25, October 2, 9, 2009

Description:  DVD's from The Teaching Company with lectures by Dr. Richard Brettell, Professor of Aesthetic Studies at The University of Texas in Dallas, will provide the participants a private tour through the Louvre's Grand Galleries.  The journey begins with a tour of the Louvre itself.  Guided by Professor Brettell's expert commentary, you will browse world-famous masterpieces and hidden gems as they come alive in luminous, full-color illustrations.

Funeral Service Today                                              6 sessions

Instructor:  Bob Frey -

Thursdays, 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m., September 3, 10, 17, 14, October 1, 8, 2009

Description:  The In's and Out's of funeral service today.  One session will be a tour of Frey Home for Funerals.  Another session will feature guest speaker Amanda Colebank, Pre-need Counselor. 

Editor's Note:  Bob did a course for us in the fall of 2005 and, besides being very informative, he has a special knack for using humor to make this serious subject enjoyable.

Instructor's Background:  Robert Frey, Jr. is a licensed funeral director and embalmer since 1975, a licensed life insurance agent since 1985, manager of FHFF for many years, and a resident of Fairmont for 56 years.

The CCC Boys                                          2 session + museum visit      

Non-member fee $15

Presenter:  Charles Piercy      -     

Thursdays, 10 a.m. - Noon, September 10, 17, 24 (museum visit), 2009

Description:  Formation of the Civilian Conservation Corps, work done by the CCC, using book, photographs, tapes and DVD of the CCC.  Former CCC boy, Harlan Frederick of Fairmont will be a guest speaker.

Presenter's Background:  Charles was born and raised near Elkins, graduate of Elkins H.S. 1956, attended D & E College, worked for Monongahela Power for 32 years, is married and has 3 children.  Charles is Vice President  of the WV CCC Museum Association.

World Religions and Spiritual Transformation             8 sessions  

Non-member fee $25

Instructor: Jude Molnar - Tuesdays & Thursdays, 10 a.m. - Noon, Sept. 29, Oct. 1, 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22, 2009

Description:  Religion and Spiritual Transformation will be a survey of the major religions of the world and address the central issues involved in personal spiritual transformation of the individual human.

Instructor's Background:  Father Jude Molnar is Adjunct Faculty, Pierpont Community & Technical College.  He is a 75 year old Roman Catholic Priest.  Father Jude did his graduate studies in History and Sociology at Catholic University in Washington, D. C. where he completed his MA.  He has been an educator for 45 years, 35 of those years teaching at Fairmont State and WVU

Iraq Update                                                                 1 session

Presenter:  Elizabeth Pyles                           

Monday, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m., September 28, 2009

Description: Elizabeth will share with us her time spent in Iraq last winter with the Christian Peacemaker Team.

Presenter's Background:  Christian Peacemaker Teams is a program of Brethren, Quaker, and Mennonite Churches (USA and Canada).  The Baptist Peace Fellowship, Every Church a Peace Church, On Earth Peace, and the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship are also sponsors of CPT.  Christians from other bodies in the ecumenical Christian community are participants in the 40 member full time Christian Peace- maker Corps and the part time 125 member Reserve Corps.  Beth is a volunteer member of the Reserve Corps.

Wednesdays, 4 p.m. - 6 p.m., September 9, 16, 23, 30, 2009

Location:  Adult Education Learning Center, (White School) 601 Locust Avenue

Description:  Learn how to develop a presentation using PowerPoint.  We will make approximately eight slides or more using various transitions, colors, texts, timing and maybe more.  Students will present their presentation to the class.

Instructor's Background:  Mary Kate is retired from Taylor County Technical Center where she taught business education classes.  She received her business degree from Fairmont State and her masters from Marshall University.  She is a member and secretary of Lifelong Learners.

Egypt: The Country and It's People                       2 sessions

Presenter:  Lenore Hinkle                            

Wednesdays, 10 a.m. - Noon, September 9, 16, 2009

Description:  This travel log is based on Lenore's two weeks in Egypt with her oldest son as part of a small tour group.  Though we will look at Egypt's antiquities, the emphasis will be on the country and its people.

Presenter's Background:  Since Lenore's first trip to Europe in 1978, she has had the opportunity to travel the world with many different groups.  She has been to all seven continents, our fifty states and WV's fifty-five counties.  Lenore retired in 1995 after teaching for thirty-eight years, with the last thirty years at Bridgeport High School.  She enjoys reading, sports, yard work, and is involved in church and community activities, including a member of Lifelong Learners.

NASA IV&V Facility Tour              Maximum students 30            1 session

Description:  Facility Tour-park and enter at rear entrance of the NASA building no later than 9 a.m.

Presenter's Background:  Jess is NASA IV&V Facility's Educational Outreach Coordinator

Conversational German                                            6 sessions           

Non-member fee $25

Instructor:  Agnes DeRosa           

Mondays, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. Sept.14, 21, October 5, 12, 19, 26, 2009

Description:  Sag's auf Deutsch (Say it in German).  Students will learn conversational German, see a video of places of interest, and learn some culture and history of Germany.  Agnes is organizing a cruise on the Rhine River.  Those interested should register for this course.

Instructor's Background:  Agnes was born and raised in Germany and moved to Fairmont in 1949. 

She has a business education from Germany and attended FSC.  She is a member and former president

of West Virginians for Life of Marion County, member of the Republican Executive Committee, water color artist, and member of Lifelong Learners.

DescriptionNext Generation Identification; Allyson R. Delaney, Management and Program Analyst, will provide an overview of the NGI program, which will be a technological upgrade to the current fingerprint-based operation.

Wednesday, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m., September 30, 2009

Description:  Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted; Charles Miller, Training Specialist, will present information about officers who were killed, feloniously or accidentally, and those officers who were assaulted while performing their duties.

Friday, 10 a.m. - Noon, October 30, 2009

Description:  CJISD Update; Update on programs and initiatives at the CJIS Division will be presented by Billy Estok, Arts & Information Specialist.

Astronomy                                                                   2 sessions

Instructor:  Joe Gonzalez                             

Wednesdays, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. October 7, 14, 2009

Description:  The first session will deal with solar observations, such as solar flares and sun spots and their effect on our planet earth.  The second session will deal with planetary and lunar observations, comets, and asteroids.  Also during the second session, for students that would like to have their own viewing scope, kits for a Galileo scope will be available for $20 and will be assembled in class.

Presenter's Background:  Joe is President of the Central Appalachian Astronomy Club of WV.  He is a former Fire Chief of Clarksburg.  The club observatory is located on Joe's property in Good Hope, outside of Jane Lew.  Their website is http://www.caacwv.com/

Iraq Today                                                                   1 session

Instructor:  Mohamed Alshallah, Associate Professor, FSU 

Date Wednesday,September 23,  1 - 3 pm

Description:  Professor Alshallah with his wife Sawsan, will be returning soon from their homeland of Iraq after spending the summer there.  Prof. Alshallah will present a lecture on their visit.

Instructor's Background:  Mohamed Alshallah is Associate Professor of Economics at Fairmont State University and has been for the last twenty-two years.  Mr. Alshallah, who was born in the city of Babylon of Iraq, came to the USA in 1976 to finish his education.  Because of the political situation in Iraq, and because he loves this country as well, he proudly became an American citizen on Nov. 19, 1993.

Orchestra and You!                                                    1 session

Instructors:  Amy Prenatt and Kim Trisel                        

Tuesday, 1 pm - 3 pm, October 6,  2009

Description:  This is an introductory course for learners to discover some of the instruments that make up an orchestra and to hear a sampling of pieces that feature these instruments.

Instructor's Background:  Amy is planning on graduating in Spring 2010 with a BA in Music Education at FSU.  She is giving her senior recital this fall and working toward her goal of becoming a high school marching band director.  Kim has her BA in Music Education K-12 from Huntington College, Huntington, IN and teaches private Piano and Voice.

Marion County Public Library Tour                         1 session

Presenter:  Becky Mayle                                              

Friday, 1 pm - 3 pm, September 25, 2009

Description:  Attendees will have a tour of the Marion County Public Library and hear an overview of library services, including a demonstration of downloadable e-books, audio books and music from WVDELI, and online database use.`

Presenter's Background:  Becky has been in charge of Reference and Adult Services at the Marion County Public Library since 2007.  She is a graduate of Grove City College and holds a master's degree from the University of Delaware.

Tour The Fixed Wing Army National Guard Aviation Training Site (FWAATS)     

Wednesday, 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. (night session), October 7, 2009

NOTE: 20/25 maximum students

Description:      We will tour the FWAATS facility at 1000 Fixed Wing Drive, Bridgeport.  This night session will enable a demonstration of, and class using, night goggles.
